Real dumb question

Everytime I try to see what "ibooks" are available I end up with stuff like "apple ibooks ipad".

If I choose "eBooks on Apple® iPad" I get sale info. Not very helpfull.

The question is - Do you need an ipad and an account to see what ebooks are available?

at this time the only way to browse the iBooks Store is to use the iBooks application on an iPad. an iPhone/iPod Touch version will be available with the 4.0 OS due out this summer. you can't browse the store through iTunes, yet.

Don't sweat it, you aren't missing anything. The catalog is small and mostly kid books. The Kindle app opens up all of Amazon, and any pub from anywhere else works just fine.

yes.. if you want the best selection, check out the kindle. it also has the benefit of being available on multiple devices. kobo is also pretty platform neutral and has a decent selection. apple's selection is pretty small and only available on the ipad.

Thanks, I just wanted to see what they had.

It sounds like they have it just to say that you can do it.

Of course itunes probably had to start with a small number of songs too.

Thanks again.

oh yep. the number of books will hopefully only grow. but as long as apple's books remain locked to the iBooks application, and the book is available from kindle or kobo for a reasonable price, i'll just buy from one of them.
