iLiad as a sketchpad?

Hi,

I asked this question on the iLiad forums, but didn't get much response. Maybe this is a better forum for this type of question.

When I think of a replacement for books, I also think of a replacement for the variety of paper notebooks I carry around (for class notes, journal, design notes, etc.) My notes often contain drawings as well as text. Questions:

1 - Has anyone used their iLiad for capturing sketches? How is the existing functionality? How are the sketches when you get them back to a regular computer?

2 - It seems the pressure sensitive functionality of the Wacom screen isn't supported yet. Will iLiad support pressure sensitivity in the sketch feature in the near future?

3 - Are any other enhancements to the existing sketch functionality planned? Are there any estimates of timeline?

4 - Will the iLiad eventually support handwriting character recognition natively? I don't regularly use a PC (I'm a Mac user), so I'd have to go through a lot of extra steps to use PC-based the handwriting recognition software. If I'm going to use this as a replacement notebook, I'd rather have the text parsed and searchable on the iLiad itself.

5 - The eInk screen is now available in color. Is a color iLiad planned? (I think a natural media art program like Corel Painter or ArtRage on a color iLiad would be a killer combination -- or even software like this in grayscale.)

Thanks for any info,

neko

First, a short note: You can't calibrate the pen (yet), so i turn the iliad 180° to get the best match between pen tip and appearing point. But i think this will be fixed. So no one really used it yet.

1. At the moment you can draw on these obscure xeb files and images. If you draw on an image, a copy with the changes will be saved and a file with the x and y coordinates of your strokes is created.
The quality of the created image is not really great, but it looks quite nice if you throw your stroke data on your favourite plot program and use some kind spline instead of straight lines.

2. no idea. It's not announced yet, and they are focusing on business needs (tm). But there's no reason why it shouldn't (in the stroke data is a thrid line filled with zeroes at the moment, i assume it will be used for pressure in the future)

3. nope, no estimates. i would guess release of a proper SDK+3 month for enhanced functionality of the iliad.

4. http://www.visionobjects.com/news---...23rd-2006.html

5. We'll see. I assume that they should try not to fsck up Iliad v1 if the want to be able to create an Iliad v2. Anyway, color eInk is still some way to go, but the fujitsu-siemens (?) prototype looked promising. I would bet on 2008 for color. (or 10-15 years later, as usual, if ereading doesn't take off this time)

That's everything i know about notetaking. I hope it helps.

I have seen a mention (not from iRex, but a newspaper group testing these things) that one was planned. If I remember, late 2007 was mentioned --
though that will probably be mid-2008 before everything comes together.
I guess they may have had discussions with iRex, and so received this information -- as far as I know iRex has not said anything.

Colour, however, seems a bit of a problem. If colour is to work, the e-paper has to be white, or at last a decent approximation to white, or everythng will be in a grey wash, as it is now.

Can you give a bit more detail here? I have a number of "draw" applications (as opposed to "paint" applications, e.g. Macromedia Freehand, Flash, Corel Paint (does have draw tools), etc. Will any of them take the stroke info? This isn't something I've tried to do before, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Regarding color, it's not that important to me right now. I don't bother to carry around colored pencils or whatever for my sketchpads & journals. Grayscale will be quite sufficient. I just didn't want to get into this and then have iRex release a color version and never go back to fix the pressure sensitivity of the monochrome version. There are no guarantees in life, but this sounds relatively promising.

Thanks again,

neko

I'd really like to see some work by a good artist done on the Iliad.

I couldn't sketch my way out of a paperbag, but here is a sample for the not-yet-iliad-owners around here. It includes the .irx file with the line data, the manifest.xml created and the resulting image.

Hey, that's really not bad at all! If I needed to, I could pull that into Flash and convert to path to take out the jaggies, but for my purposes, I think I could use it as-is. Thanks for posting this!

(Though I'm still quivering in anticipation of actual pressure sensitivity support.... )
