Which book should be my first Hemingway

One of my 2010 reading goals is to read my first Hemingway. Which one would you suggest - thank you!!

It's been a couple of decades since I read any Hemingway, but my favorite was "The Old Man and the Sea", which is a very quick read. I also enjoyed "The Sun Also Rises", and, to a lesser extent, "A Farewell to Arms". I started a couple of others but lost interest.

I'd second "The Old Man and the Sea". One of the few High School reading assignments I truly enjoyed.

I'm going to disagree with The Old Man and the Sea choice. It is a good choice and should be read if you want to read Hemingway, but I think A Farewell to Arms or For Whom the Bell Tolls are better choices to discover not only the brilliance (or lack there of) of his writing, but his writing style. TOMS is really a novelette and written near the end of his life, although he did win a Nobel Prize for it. It is/was required reading in school primarily because it won the Nobel Prize, not because it was an outstanding example of his writing.

A Farewell to Arms is my recommendation. I remember it as being an easier and more enjoyable read than the others. It would serve as a good introduction to his work.

I thought the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded for a body of work, rather than a particular book.

Start with the short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. I enjoyed this story so much I went out and purchased more Hemingway. Big mistake. I learned pretty quickly I'm not a big Hemingway fan.

I liked For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , but I didn't like A Farewell to Arms. I'm not sure if there's a good way to find out which books you'd like, but you can be sure they're different, so you'll probably like some, and dislike some.

Hey, I'm finally back to the thread, and I find a heap of responses. You lot are legends. Thanks for that. All will be greatfully considered (and, knowing myself, there's a good chance all will be read, even those not recommended
