Spring Design Alex - launch today?

Wasn't the spring Design Alex supposed to be on sale today?
Their website is the same....hmmm, I'm guessing with the legal shenanigans over the nook, that the Alex is going to head into vapourware territory.

Shame if it doesn't come out, I think this is one of the most interesting ideas in e-readers right now. The announced price is way too high though.

Was it set to come out today, or just this month? I remember them announcing stuff during CES but it's all such a blur.

They gave today's date, 22 February. A number of sites have added a token amount of commentary to their regurgitations of Spring Design's press releases, but you can also get them straight from the horse's mouth. The most recent one claims the Alex would be available in their online store ("Coming soon!") on 22 Feb for $359. Of course, the most recent press release is dated 7 January and I haven't been able to find any more recent mention of the device that wasn't an article mentioning interesting upcoming e-reading devices.

If anyone does have more (recent) information or insight into this, I'd sure be appreciative.

Yeah, it was supposed to be released today. I checked their website this morning and was disappointed to see no change. I did find alexereader on twitter though. Only one posting, and that in late January.

I don't think it's heading into vapourware technology - but its definitely heading into iRex territory...

They updated the Alex shop. It now says,
Quote:
Thanks for your patience. We're almost ready with our Alex store.
Keep checking in and by the first week of March you'll be able to order your Alex online.

It's really started to bug me how anytime a company misses a supposed deadline (whether they SET that deadline or not) even by a single day, people start jumping on said company like it had ordered dogs be kicked and Cheerios be urinated in.

Can we just take a step back and breathe for a moment here?

Just relax and give 'em a minute, will ya?

The problem I had with this was not that they missed a deadline, which I understand happens from time to time and does not necessarily involve urine-soaked Cheerios and dogs who've undergone "percussive maintenance", nor indeed any intentional acts of malevolence at all.

The frustrating/worrying aspect here was that they missed a deadline without any comment after having not said a word (that I could find) for over a month. Their promised store had only the same old "Coming soon..." message. The updated (to paraphrase) "We're almost ready, come back again in a week!" message they have now would have been quite sufficient, but there was absolutely nothing to indicate any awareness that their own, self-set deadline had come and gone.

Now that there is a sign of life, I'm personally not going to hold the delay against them. Unfortunately, though, in the meantime my conviction that this was going to be my imprudent impulse purchase for the year has wavered for only peripherally related reasons (i.e. learning, during my frantic Alex info-searches, of a different display tech that might be available later this year).

Maybe you have other examples, but the only other significant delay which prompted weird behaviour that I know of is the iRex device, and they were delayed 5 months with constantly reset dates and no indication of what was causing it. So people were definitely getting restless there.

i was reading something about touchscreen tech the other day and in the article which was talking about multitouch on ereaders the company being interviewed said that one of their partners was being delayed with launching a new ereader product because of delays in e-ink display production. perhaps it was this product being alluded to or this product is another casualty.

Peratech lists Samsung as a Licensee of their tech on their corporate page.

I'm just starting to really learn about the Alex ereader. It seems like it will have a lot of interesting functionality (smartphone like web browsing plus an e-ink reading experience). I'm looking forward to the release of this ereader.
