OpenVPN on your nook
Hey folks,
I need a few volunteers from outside of the US to test the OpenVPN on their nooks. You need to have the softrooted nook (preferably with 1.2 update), ADB installed on your computer and an account at alwaysvpn. Please join me on http://nookdevs.com/IRC for further instructions. |

It's WiFi or 3G, that's causing the battery drain. So, indirectly, this can harm your battery life. When you frequently use it to surf the B&N webstore on nook, purchase lots of books and download them, this significantly will drain your battery. But not because of that VPN client, but because of accessing WiFi or 3G. I haven't got this tool, yet. But I've been surfing the store yesterday via 3G while on the train for about 1 hour. It was draining the battery maybe 20%. But how often and for how long will you do it? More likely probably is, checking the store, searching for your book of choice, buying it and downloading it. And here this tool will be brillant. For the moment you have to mark any title for your wishlist and later on purchase the wishlist on PC. Now you can do it on the train or at the beach. Outside of US. |

So after the setup we have to use VPN everytime? Or it is our choice to use VPN or not, easily?

It is your choice. VPN needs to be activated. But I guess, after successful tests it will be simplified. I hope for a simple button "activate VPN" in nookLauncher instead of activating it via ADB.

It would be great if there is a GUI to simplify VPN enable/disable. I'll wait till then because I will use it on the road with 3G.

That's the reason I didn't want to post the link to instructions in the forum -- it's not quite working yet (even in the command line form). I'll try to get back to it over the weekend.

I think I got it working (at least Trook & whatismyip.com think I'm in Texas). Please help me test the B&N Shop (not Alice screensaver tho, it doesn't seem to work at all).
Same page: http://nookdevs.com/OpenVPN and the only things changed are the lines concerning busybox and new symlinks. If you followed the original instructions, you will probably need to adb shell rm /system/xbin/bb first and then follow instructions but only carry out ones concerning busybox/symlinks. If you have any questions or run into problems -- join us on IRC. I *might* be able to hook you up with limited-traffic trial accounts at AwlaysVPN, can't post anything yet, just ping me on IRC. |

Nook will be a perfect e-reader for me if i am staying in US, no need for hacks likes these (for noobs like me tend to mess things up). Just read and buy as i go along, with the regular software updates by B&N solving hiccups such as folders, short battery life etc
![]() oh well .... thank you so much for the hacks. |

Hi Stangri
I`ve followed your instruction and I found the following problem: 1. step 6 when create new folders, it said file exists, for every folder. Why? 2. any way I can do step 7 and 8 without problem 3. in step 9 adb shell /data/local/busybox --install, it say no such file or directory (so many lines) and next commands also did not work. I then stop. How can I step back as if I did not do all the above? I`m scared now! |

1. No idea, it should work fine.
2 and 3. You need to create paths in step 6, looks like it's failing for some reason. I would recommend not rebooting your nook until you revert step 1 by running: adb shell mv /system/lib/libcrypto-orig.so /system/lib/libcrypto.so adb shell mv /system/lib/libssl-orig.so /system/lib/libssl.so and then when you have time, join me on IRC for troubleshooting. |
