My wife is a Reader-cide...

I was asked to expand a bit further on this post

My wife has executed 1 500 and 1 505 and is working on the slow torture of her 2nd 505.

Wife demanded edit:This tale of horror and woe has been three years in the making and is not something that just occurred recently.

The first 500 was done in with a guillotine like fashion when it dropped unnoticed from the pile of stuff she was getting out of the car into the door well. What damage may or may not have occurred from the drop itself, was rendered moot, when she slammed the car door close --- CRUNCH.

Wife edit:No, No, No, - I gently placed the 500 into the car door well while getting stuff out.

Her second Reader the 505 was thrown from a decent height onto the looming depths of concrete below, after slipping out of her purse.

Her third Reader was tossed from the plank (well a coffee table is close enough). Currently the shell is being held on with medical tape (my wife is very clear that this is medical not duct tape), but is otherwise functional.

Wife edit:Well actually it's been dropped two times now, both times it hit hard enough to eject the SD card, but it's still working, damnit...

On the more serious side, throughout all of this she remains very impressed with the build quality of the Sony Readers and especially the 505. For instance while the screen is cracked and the case very definitely bent from her first one hitting the concrete, I was still able to transfer files to and from the Reader afterwards.

We will be replacing her current 505 with mine when the time comes, and her greatest fear at this point is finding a suitable replacement for that one.

Dear Jim,

Remind me that if I ever meet your wife and she wants to see mine... to tell her that I left my Reader at home..

Invest in a good, heavy duty, protective case for her next one...and demand that she use it at all times!!!! Also, maybe add it as a rider on your renter's/ homeowner's insurance policy!!!

I showed the story to my wife who had some edits to make.

Kindlekitten, my wife is resistant to using duct tape instead.

Penny, I would need a case she could use the light wedge on without getting it out of the case. She's doing much better in transit now since she got a purse with a good padded holding pocket for the reader. Her current problem is accidents at home.

those edits are hilarious !

"Wife edit:No, No, No, - I gently placed the 500 into the car door well while getting stuff out. "

reading those stories made my hair stand on end, i'm completely paranoid about hurting my beloved 600 ! but on the other hand they're a bit reassuring as well, it's good to know chances are it would survie a minor accident (and i have no car, so the possibility of a door well (i don't know what that is, actually...) incident is excluded !).

My reader jumped off the bed one night when I fell asleep while reading. I don't know what it was thinking because clearly it is too small to get off the bed alone! After that I tired a pretty little leash to it and hold on for dear life anytime my reader is "in the air". Clearly my reader can't be trusted! So far all has been good and the leash has prevented a couple of more dive attempts by my reader.

I think my reader longs to be a BASE jumper. Only it seems to forget it doesn't have a parachute!

Good luck to your wife! And what a wonderful hubby to keep buying her more readers!

I guess some people should just stick to p-books. Heck, my gf has taken custody of my old 500 for about 2 years now, toting it everywhere, and it is still in excellent condition! Which *really* makes me question anyone who has damaged 3 in a shorter time....
