MYIREX account

It is said in the manual that this account is used to "download software, newspaper and periodicals automatically to the device", but how? I registered, but the IREX website doesn't sell any content!

They've said that since the iLiad came out, several years ago. With the iLiad I think it's basically just for software updates. There might have been a handful of European newspapers that were available, but nothing that really interested me. Software updates for the DR1000 and DR800 are downloaded from their website, not via MyiRex.

I think they've always wanted to offer a lot more content through MyiRex, but it's never really materialized. You're going to get most of your stuff via the other eMall partners (B&N, NewspapersDirect, etc).

Actually, there is nothing on https://myirex.irexnet.com/ except an "inbox".

Then there is this: http://ebookmall.irexreader.com/ mentioned on my 800SG. I went there and there are 4 shops actually, although I haven't done anything there yet.

The downloadable content isn't really viewable via the website login. The way it used to work on the iLiad was that the device itself would connect to "iDS" using your MyiRex account and from there it would get either software updates or a handfull of newspapers. The only thing you really did via the webpage was manage your account (update password, change PIN, etc) and potentially sign up for the iLiad developers package.

I haven't really played around with the ebookmall stuff yet. At least for the B&N stuff, I think the idea is that you use it via the DR800, not by going to that URL on a PC. Don't know if that's how the others work too.

On the European part of the IREX ebookmall there are 7 stores - the same 4 as the US site plus three UK high street bookshop chains - which despite the fact that I am in Denmark, seem willing to sell me ebooks, (I can't definitely confirm this but it lets me go through the process of purchasing ebooks, which I abort when I have to come up with the money). And since, being in Europe, I have no other way of connecting to them, it must be via computer.

Yeah, it probably works both ways. What I've read before is that some people have figured out how to make their browser look like the DR800 when it hits that URL, which will then show you the list of shops that appear on the DR800SG. For example, B&N doesn't show up normally with your browser, but it does from the DR800SG.
