Math Of Publishing - New York Times

Did a quick search and didn't see this article, apologies if someone has already posted it.

Math Of Publishing

Worst section in the article, but it does seem to jive with how publishers wish ebooks didn't exist:

“If you want bookstores to stay alive, then you want to slow down this movement to e-books,” said Mike Shatzkin, chief executive of the Idea Logical Company, a consultant to publishers. “The simplest way to slow down e-books is not to make them too cheap.”

The simplest way to stop the incoming high tide is to get a bucket with a tiny hole in the bottom and bucket the ocean back into itself... Sure it feels like you are doing something, but it's the OCEAN and eventually it will win. That's the kind of battle newspapers are fighting with the Internet and soon enough, publishers who want to stick with print wioll be facing against e-books and the Internet.

People like Mike Shatzkin are the worst kinds of capitalists, only interested in maintaining existing market conditions because it has suited them in the past. They don't understand how the market they are in is changing. They don't know how to take advantage of new technologies and will eventually fail.
