Downloading books to ipod touch

Hi,

I've searched to see if this has been answered already and couldn't find anything. From what I did find, I have set up Calibre and the ipod in the right way, I think.

What I see on the ipod when I try and access the on-line catalogue is a short delay when selecting the catalogue entry followed by a safari browser that says the server is slow or not responding. The URL is based on "reader.mac.com" so I think it is receiving a feed.

When I try to access the catalogue through the URL "http://mymac.local:8080/stanza" I do see a formatted feed in the browser.

I've tried with the firewall off as well as the port forwarded on my router (although I don't think this is necessary)

There are no errors in the Calibre log.

Any ideas? I'm finding the ebook world very frustrating what with devices that won't work on the mac, DRM, different formats etc.....

Regards

Andrew

Ha, fixed it....

..actually something pretty silly. I had used Http://...... instead of http://... The ipod input keys automatically capitalise the first letter and I hadn't noticed.

I also found that if I used http://mymac.local:8080/stanza it listed "stanza" as a book. If I used http://mymac.local:8080/ it listed my book.

Anyway, upshot is I can download. Now I just need to check out the formatting of the converted PDF.

Regards

Andrew

You're probably adding it as Web Page and not as Stanza Catalog.

Here's my iPod Touch Download question:

I have had zero trouble with Calibre. Love it. Awesomness on a stick!

But...

When I go to the Calibre library from my iPod Touch I see everything that is in the library, but for reasons beyond my ken, it will not let me download those ebooks that I have purchased in the secure eReader format (PDB).

It lets me have them in the desktop Calibre library, it lets me see them from my iPod, but it won't give me the stinkin' little download button on my iPod like it does for all the other formats of ebooks I have.

What up??

P.S. If you are laughing right now at my mention of secure eReader PDB files, I don't blame you. I was a noob and didn't know any better than to stay away from those files which are obviously produced in some back office on the 17th tier of Hell by overpaid, underworked public servant paper pushers.

I've long ago given Fictionwise the "finger."

But still I have these ebooks and I am not a rich man. Kinda' hard to pay for them again in a format that wasn't created in Mordor. Know what I mean?

What reader are you using on the iPod touch? Calibre is currently targetted at Stanza which requires ePub files and does not support pdb files.

Of course if you can get the DRM removed (you can google for how to achieve this) calibre can then be used to convert the pdb files into ePub format.

Actually, Stanza on my iPod Touch will happily take these secure eReader PDB files if I pass them to the iPod via the Stanza GUI on my Mac. But the Stanza GUI is lackluster to say the least and it doesn't allow for the inclusion of metadata and all that jazz.

Plus there is just something that gets under my skin about having to have two different tools to do one job, especially when the tool that isn't helping me at the moment (Calibre) is the tool I like much better under all other conditions.

You can always raise a feature request (via ticket on the Calibre home site) for the .pdb extension to also be included in the download links that are generated for a Stanza catalog. Alternatively you could make the source amendment yourself and then submit it for inclusion in the standard calibre product.

Just sent a copy of my OP in this thread to Calibre via their ticket system.

This bit right here is outside my capacity. I am a professional interpreter by trade. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Polish, but I do not speak Techanese.
