Where to see one?

Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a few days, reading and filling up my head with facts, and deciding which reader to get. At this point I have it narrowed down to the Sony 300, Sony 600, Nook or the EZReader 5". This may seem like kind of a broad range, but I have a $50 gift card (birthday gift) that I can use at B&N or at a place that sells the Sony readers; this makes the prices more competitive and makes the Sony 300 the cheapest of the lot by far.

Between the features and everything, I think the EZReader is clearly the best on paper (no pun intended). Combine that with the personal support that Robert brings to the forum here and it has got me 99% convinced that I'll end up with an EZReader.

However, I'm a try-before-you-buy kind of guy. Especially when it comes to spending $200+ on one item. So, my question is this: Where can I go to physically check one out? I noticed that Astak is in San Jose...I live on the Peninsula, can I maybe swing by there to see them? Or are they in a large chain store that may be closer by?

Thanks,
Dan

Actually, no. The closest Walmart is actually further from me than the Astak offices in San Jose. Got just about everything else nearby though (Target, BB, Fry's, etc).

Dear Dan:

Do not forget our special: buy an Astak eBook Reader before the end of February 14 and get a free Mighty Bright LED eBook Reading light.

Dan, come on down to Astak. 1911 Hartog Drive, San Jose. You can play around with mine in the lobby. AND... if you buy you save the freight!

Send me a PM on here and I will give you my email address. Just set up a time when I am here!!

OR... just come down. I will likely be here and Ruby or Elliott can also assist you. Tell them RobertB sent you.

We are about three blocks off 101 freeway near San Jose International, off Brokaw and Zanker

SEE for yourself why there is no true comparison between the Sony and the Pocket PRO!

Does this work with Mac OS 10.4? No one has mentioned wireless here, does that mean this doesn't have wireless? If it doesn't GREAT... one more possibility.

No stinking wireless.

It is USB. If a Pen drive works with you O/S, the PEz will work.
It appears as 1 0r 2 disk drives (the SD card is the second drive)

I would suggest saving your gift card for books, instead of the savings on a reader. Just think of it this way... Buy the best reader there is, and you have 50 bucks to purchase your first reading material! Considering the format options of the pEZ, B/N and Sony will both carry a format you can use.

The EZ Reader can read Adobe ePubs from any bookstore except B&N. This is because B&N uses a new password-based DRM scheme for its ePubs. This might be available later for the EZ Readers, but we don't know for sure.

Good sources for ePubs are Sony and Books on Board and (just added recently to their Secure format options) FictionWise.

Dear All:

For those who are somewhat new to the Astak Dedicated Forum, Griffonwing has been on hiatus. We are overjoyed to have him back!! He is exceedingly smart and knowledgeable, has real "HEART", helps anybody, and is kind of the Father of the Slate Blue Pocket PRO.

I do not know if theDucks knows "Griffie"... but they BOTH are always helping and should become fast friends!

I've got a few ebooks (all in HTML format). So, that is one reason. I also have found several free ebooks (these are all uncopyrighted ones, such as a few novels written in the 1800s).

There will be another ePub source

Dear Wallcraft:

We at Astak expect that before the end of next week we will have news of a new ePub website that will be a great source for such eBooks. This will have DRM, non-DRM, and the Google 1.5 Million FREE ebook library. The delay is getting Google to do final approval of the website. I cannot say more at this time... but stay tuned!!
