I have an iPod...sort of

I am so excited! I have always wanted an iPod and today my husband came home with one. He was leaving his office and going out to the parking lot when he came across an iPod (nano) laying on the ground. He returned to his office to ask if it was his co-workers or anyone that was in the office at the time but it wasn't. He then called a few people that had been in to speak with him to inquire if it was theirs, but nope. He went to the other offices that are in the same building but no ones either. He and his co-worker asked people all day

There are no photos or anything on it to indicate owner. I checked the serial online and whose ever it was did not register it. We are going to hold onto it for a few days (meaning I won't add or delete anything from it) to see if anyone asks about it

Do you think we should do more to track down owner?

It seems like you gave finding the owner a reasonable effort. I personally wouldn’t go too far over the top unless it was an item that may have some sentimental value attacked like a wedding ring or something.

The proper thing to do is report it to the police in the area it was found and wait the 30 or so days to see if anyone reports it missing. If no one comes to report it then you can keep it.

The only other thing I could think of would be to post something in the lobby of of near by offices (if there is a place to do that). Otherwise, happy is right, let the police know, wait a month, then enjoy your new iPod.

well, I called the Police department and they asked that I bring it in. No one has reported it missing. What are the chances that if no one claims it, that the PD keep it instead?

Usually the PD keep lost articles for a certain time and then auction/sell them to the public.

I think they only auction it off if no one claims it including the person that turned it in.

Push it further then. I would consider it theft against myself if a cop took it. I would press the issue about seeing the paperwork of release for verification.

I would put an ad in the paper for lost and found and have the people that call identify some of the songs and what the ipod looked like. If I lost something I wouldn't go to the police.

One way to locate the owner would be to copy the songs off the ipod and open them on your computer in a text editor. Any songs bought off of iTunes will have a unique identifier which is the username of the person who bought it, even if the song does not have DRM.

Well the battery just died and it looks like you need a special cable to connect it to the computer. I don't want to spend money buying a cable for the iPod if I don't have to. Wish it took a standard USB cable though so I could do as you suggested
