Question Does anyone have a Nokia 770?

I just read they released Internet Tablet OS 2006 edition yesterday. And I've been wanting a eBook, but I'm tired of waiting for the eInk ones. And so I'd like to know from any owners how good is the PDF viewer on the Nokia770 ? Also does it support RTF files? Does anyone have screenshots from the product itself?

Here are the specs I was looking at and its definately got my attention since its nicely priced as well. $359

One disadvantage is the relatively weak CPU making the unit slow to respond.

I think it will still be faster than the 4~6 sec page turn of an iLiad.

I found a site that had screenshots of the device the other day.
http://www.internettablettalk.com/ga...4/limit/recent

I saw a screenshot of it even supporting CHM

I read somewhere you can turn off the WiFi access and then it uses less batter power and lasts much longer. Can anyone verify this? I just want it to read PDFs, TXT and a few other formats, I dont really plan to surf the web with it or play games or anything.

I use my 770 almost exclusively for reading e-books. Turning off WiFi extends battery life, but it is still less than I would like (I don't usually let it run down, but I guess about 6 hours max). I don't think it is possible to read encrypted PDF files, there is an included PDF reader and evince also displays PDFs (not yet for 2006). I use FBReader, which is great for unencrypted formats (including .rtf, and unencrypted .lit files). I used to have an eb-1150, which was ok but I prefer the 770 even with the smaller screen. If the screen was a bit bigger and the battery life about 2x it would be perfect. Extra batteries are available, but I don't know of any separate chargers (so they would have to be recharged in the 770).

some more questions:

do you have to do any horizontal scrolling in PDFs?

how fast is the "next page" button work for PDFs?

I too use my 770 primarily for reading; I read about the device here and other places and expected that it probably wouldn't be acceptable due to screen size, however on a lark went down to CompUSA and actually held one; after seeing the screen and realizing that I could actually *read* everything I immediately bought one.

FBReader is good, although it doesn't seem to like RTFs with embedded images-- or at least I can only get about 1/2 way through a 3.5Mb "Indistinguishable from Magic" by Robert L Forward in RTF before it crashes; this is the only RTF I've got that has embedded images, and all others work fine.

I generally don't use the PDF viewer. I suspect the PDFs I would prefer to access are too large (eg JBoss documentation at several hundred pages, and several megs in size) since actually accessing them seems to be very slow compared to FBReader.

I'm actually quite pleased with the battery life-- I end up charging every few days, although I probably am only able to actually read for about 2 - 3 hrs a day on it. I did spring for a second AC Adaptor so that I could have one at home and at the office.

While having a larger display would be nice, for portable reading I'm happy with the display. I do enjoy being able to read one-handed, and if it gets too much larger/heavier that might become an issue.

My only major issue with it is that it is an LCD, so I'm staring into a light to read-- I was hoping for an e-ink device, but at less than 1/2 the price of the iLiad (I bought mine for $299 + tax) with a color display I'm very happy.

Specifically, I've not read a printed book (other than tech manuals) since I bought my nokia 770 a month ago.
