What AvantGo channels do you have?
I know that AG is a touchy subject around here, but even though I've come and gone several times, it's convenient.
Myself, I sync daily: AccuWeather.com American Museum of Natural History Astrology.com AvantBlog AvantGo Travel Guide CNET Reviews ComputerWorld Daily Almanac ExploreZone GOPUSA mobile JiWire HotSpot Locator Learning Annex of Los Angeles Learning Annex of San Francisco Mobile Concierge Palm Horoscopes Radio-Locator Travel Guide Scholastic.com-Education in motion Space.com The Sporting News The Wall Street Journal TheFeature USA TODAY.com washingtonpost.com Wired News Words of the Month Yahoo! and all of this takes up 2440KB of 3000KB. So what do you guys sync and how else could I use up the remaining space? POL9A Last edited by Pride Of Lions; 06-03-2005 at 11:55 PM. Reason: Spelling. |

I just realized that WSJ doesn't offer AG content (I thought it was only subscription based if you want to read it online), but I've just added the recommended replacements: Forbes.com, BusinessWeek online, and Reuters. We'll see how much space those take up.

I just checked my AG usage and I'm up to 2610KB of 3000KB. Still looking for recommendations...

I would love to comment, but the last time I've used Avantgo was like 2 years ago. Is it really still worth installing it? I remember it wasn't small and I really couldn't see a justification to have installed beside iSilo.

I used the new Avantgo 5.7 a few months ago, and my use did not last a week. Size aside - and AG files are ridiculously large when compaired to either iSilo or Plucker, which do the same thing - I got soft resets, garbled text, and often the sync would not work at all. My answer to you, Alexander, is that it is not worth using, not least because, in addition to its other shortcomings, it gives only snippets of sites. Philippe Radley

No, AG isn't as good as anything else out there. I have a Z2 with the 128MB's, so size isn't an issue with me (plus, they only give me a maximum of 3000KB.)
If I wanted to, I could configure each channel I get from AG into iSilo, but 1) That's a lot of work (with the settings and all) and 2) It's so easy to just HotSync and get these little snippets. I do use iSilo religiously and daily sync about 25MB of content from all of my conversions. I just feel nostalgic for my first offline browser. I agree with each and every negative comment about it, the advertising, the little snippets, the non-landscape in Palm OS,... but it's easy. I don't get soft resets or garbled text, and that would sour me to it in a hurry, but since iSilo is here to save the day, AG is more like a toy. And it was the lack of AG moving to OS X that led me to another offline browser which led me to iSilo which led me to Turcic.com which helped me understand the power that is iSilo. It comes full circle. POL9A |

BTW, The reason I left Avant Go was that iSilo was superior and AG seemed to be almost abandoned, and took a lot of space. But you're right that there was something convenient about just hotsyncing and it's there. There were a couple of feeds I could never deduce the hidden URL for also. So long ago I don't even remember which ones I couldn't get, so by now I guess it doesn't matter to me anyway. But I'm curious what other people have in their AG lists. Might be interesting to do another similar thread for Plucker, iSilo, Sunrise, etc. also! |

Great idea, Bobr!!
Based on your excellent suggestion, Bob, (and thanks to Alexander for letting us upload .IXL's instead of having to ZIP them first) I just started an iSilo thread. (I wish I knew how to attach a cool looking image like you guys do when you have articles on the Frontpage. If y'all tell me, I'll go edit it so that it looks all official.)
I wish that iSiloX had an automatic setting where I didn't have to turn the application on before I go to bed at night, but rather it would turn itself on when needed and then all I'd have to do is just wake up and HotSync. Sometimes I forget and then my whole day is ruined. (Not really, but you know what I mean.) I hear such a thing is possible with a PC, but I'm a (all-together) "Mac guy" and it's lacking. Maybe in a future incarnation. Or this "Tiger" "Automator" program can be set to do my bidding. Now I just need $129. Anyway, go upload your .IXL's. It'd be cool to see what you guys are geeking out to. POL9A P.S. I just don't feel like paying for Audible. Especially now with the Podcast Revolution and the goo-gobs of free content out there. It kinda bugs me, though, that "Your Mac Life" has archived all of their content on Audible. I know, life's a B. |

Well, not really. I meant a thread in MobileRead. I tried to find it, without any success. The search engine does not accept words with less than four letters, meaning you can't look for "mac", which makes that thread harder to find.
