About to ditch my Kindle as I can't get the books that I want.

Hi guys,

Title of the thread says it all I guess. I recieved a kindle for christmas and I think I have had enough already. I have looked at Baen, fictionwise and Amazon, smashwords and Waterstones (amoungst many many others) and I can't for love nor money (literally) find
a) More than 3 of the diskworld books.
b) Anything by Peter F Hamilton
c) Raymond E Feist
d) David Eddings

Most supporting formats seem to be Secure Mobipocket/Microsoft Reader/eReader and EPUB. None of which the Kindle can read. Before I ditch this POS can anyone point me in the direction of a website that will actually sell me a half decent selection of books?

To put the icing on the cake, the list of cheap and free books that is stickied at the top of this forum isn't supported by Amazon UK either!

Amazon UK seems to have the license to distribute the square root of sod all.

Sorry to sound somewhat aggressive but I've really had enough.

Thanks for any comments / suggestions.

Mike

Amazon is the only place you can get DRM'd books I believe, you would need to crack the DRM on Waterstones etc. and convert.

1) Amazon has 6 Discworld novels I believe, alot more are available not on Amazon

2) I think Books on Board has some

3) Amazon has 3 Raymond E. Feist ebooks

4) Amazon has one, Whsmith as well

Have you tried going to the Sony store and seeing if their selection is any better?

Perhaps someone with a Sony or another ebook reader where you live could guide you in finding a reader that would have the author you want.

Hi Seagull thanks for the quick reply.

At the moment its dribs and drabs, books that I dont want to read. I had a look at the listing of Terry Pratchett and Raymond E Feist and to be honest out of what 40+ books there are 4/5 none of which are the good ones (the ones they are famous for).

When you said a lot Terry Pratchett novels were avaialble not from Amazon, could you tell me where? (DRM free of course).

I aint going to purchase books and then try to crack the DRM....sod that i would rather go the whole hog and just torrent cracked versions (which I would really rather not do!).

Anyway....more comments always welcome

Hi desert grandma,

Most of the online books stores that I have seen support EPUB which of course the PRS reads so I don't really think range would be such a killer.

A reminder: Baen Books does not sell through Amazon, so any of their books, you must buy from www.webscription.net.

Okay.

So.........are you saying if you bought a Sony, you could find the books you want?

But Amazon UK doesn't have them?

Easy decision. Return the Kindle and get a reader that allows you access to the authors you like to read.

and be sure to let Amazon know why you are returning it, and why you are buying a competitors reader.

Nicely, of course!

I see all your authors listed on the U.S. Amazon Kindle Store site (Discworld only has 4 titles, so it's a case of not every book being in ebook form).

There are those who have changed their address to Disneyland or some such location and are buying content from the U.S. store. If you go this route you may want to set up a separate Amazon account just for your Kindle with the U.S. address, register your Kindle to that account and fund it with Gift Certificates/Cards.

Then you're SOL. Look, torrenting masses of 'cracked' ebooks is going to up your chances of virii sneaking in, unless you want to D/L HTML versions and run them through either Calibre, Kindlegen or Mobipocket Creator.

And there's nothing ethically wrong with stripping the DRM from mobi ebooks you have purchased - although, no doubt many governments call that 'criminal behavior'.

But the best thing to do is agitate for Amazon to make Kindle versions. Many of the books listed there have the 'Would you like to see this in Kindle' button. (Or whatever the actual button text says.) Press that button for each title!

Yep, just change your Country to "United States" in the Manage Your Kindle section and you'll have access to a much larger selection.

It's not necessary to create a new account or pay with gift cards as your credit card billing address can be different from your "location".

I've bought a dozen books this way and haven't encountered any issues (nor have I received a letter from Amazon asking if I want to change my address).

They do have DRM, but stripping them is so easy I don't see what the problem is.
