Finally got my hands on a nook!
I ended up in not one, but two bookstores today - Borders in Dekalb, IL was hosting a signing with Julie Hyzy, and I attended that (and had a blast, more in the Lounge on that), and Barnes and Noble in Dekalb. This is the first chance I've had to get over there since the stores got the demo units.
First off, I must say I was impressed. They had it prominently displayed, and it was in sleep mode. After I figured out where the power button was, it woke right up - no sluggishness there! I had no problem with the bottom touch screen, and the unit overall did not seem sluggish either. (This is the biggest complaint I've seen in relation to the nook, but I didn't experience it). The demo titles on it displayed beautifully, and I like the feel of the unit. Like the looks, too. There are several more detailed reviews here, so I'm not going to go into too much detail, but I will sum up by saying: If I was going to get another dedicated six inch e-ink device, it would be a nook. |

I tried a nook at our local B&N in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA and my impression was overall positive. I was left with one question, however. The main reason I'm on a waiting list for a nook is the dictionary feature (lacking in my Sony PRS-500). Is the nook's dictionary stored internally or are lookups done online? I picked a random word in the "Dracula" demo book and waited several minutes for it to find the definition.

There has been a firmware update since the initial complaints about slowness (which was my experience). Maybe the update has made a difference.

Maybe so. Something certainly did, because this unit was responding instantly to my input on the bottom screen. Very nice.

The dictionary on the nook is nearly completely useless. It's microscopic (I think only 20,000 or so entries compared to the 250,000 on the Kindle) and is horrendously slow to use. With the Kindle you just flick the 5-way nav button to the word [which you can do quite quickly] and the definition shows up right away at the bottom of the screen [and hitting enter will show you the 'full' definition if necessary]. On the nook, you have to wake up the lcd screen (which takes a second), scroll to the lookup choice on the lcd (with the laggy scroll gesture), pick lookup, use the on-screen 4-way nav buttons to highlight the word [slloowwwwwlllyy since you can't really click ahead] - then tell it to look up the definition... wait while it tells you its looking up, then clears the entire screen to tell you.... that the word wasn't found... rinse wash repeat.
It's a complete joke of a feature. I was floored by how bad it was - that and searching on the nook [don't get me started on searching...] |
