PRS-900 Using different computers?

I'm looking to get a 900 in the hopefully near future and was just contemplating file management. I'm a bit of a nomad, computer-wise. I have "my" laptop, and the family/DH's desktop that I use at home. At work, I'm all over the freakin' place depending on where I'm assigned on a given day, using group or semi-private (access restricted to users in my division) although I do have an office computer that is limited to me. A lot of my reading will be scientific articles that I find during the course of my workday. Which I may find wherever I happen to be at the moment, looking up stuff relevant to a case. It would be keen if I could just plug in my reader and sideload (that's the right term, yes?) it on wherever I am, without having to register something or install anything.

So, does it work that way, or do I need a "base" computer of some kind? If I install Calibre to manage my files, can I install it on one of my home computers and access that organizational goodness from elsewhere?

I don't know what "sideload" means, but the Sony devices just connect as an external USB disk with the USB cable, and you can simply copy files to it using Windows Explorer. No need to use any other software.

Exactly as Harry says. You can plug it in to any computer, and it will simply show up like a USB thumbdrive does. Copy/paste or drag/drop files.... BTW you put your books in the database/media/books folder on your reader.....easy!

My advice is for you to to consolidate your work into one wireless laptop.

I just yesterday deactivated/uninstalled the Sony Library from my work computer for a couple of reasons. (e.g. separation of church and state

).

I try to keep my personal stuff off the work computer(s), but if your work involves using your reader etc. then I'm sure it's appropriate.

I do believe calibre has some network-type version, but I don't know that would be accessable from "anywhere."

I run my main Calibre install on my home desktop but have a backup/copy of it on my netbook as well and in addition keep (and backup) an ebook directory which I throw everything into.

Calibre has a web server component that will let you access books from anywhere. I'm not sure what the requirements are though, I think you could find out for sure in the Calibre forum.
