PRS-300 First impression of PRS-300 and a little comparison to Ililad

This is my first post here, but I am an e-reader user for quite some time and also a "lurker" in this fine forum. I got my first device, the irex Iliad in August 2008.

I primarily read technical literature in PDF format, and for that purpose the display resolution and size of the Iliad (1024x768 pixel, 8 inch) is quite ok.

But I wanted a more portable device, with a longer battery life, to take with me more easily. So I looked into the PRS-300. The resolution of 800x600 is ok, because other devices do not give more resolution, only a bigger display. And the capability to reflow PDFs was also an interesting perspective.

So I got one a few days ago, as I am located in Germany, the reader emerged late in the online stores here. I finally could get it for 185,- EUR. Keep in mind, that the Iliad was 500,- EUR at the time I got it.

First impression after unpacking the PRS-300 was "Wow, really a nice metal shell!". The weight is also a lot less than the Iliad.

After installing some books on it and started reading I was even impressed more. The switch-on time from standby is nearly instant. The reflowing of PDFs works nice, and I can also read PDFs in landscape mode in the original layout, half page per screen. Epubs also work nice.

The display is crisp and the background not as grey as on the Iliad.

I really like the reader so far, and the price point is quite ok. I think at a few bucks less, say 100,- to 150,- EUR this could make quite a big impact in the reader market, also for the occasional reader.

I do use the included "Reader Library" software only for the creation of collections or to get DRMed epubs on the device. Otherwise I copy the files directly on the reader (it shows up a a standard mass storage device in Windows XP).

Here also some pictures, first a comparison of size and "whiteness" of the PRS-300 and Iliad, then the PRS-300 in landscape mode with the same document and finally a page of an epub on the PRS-300.
