Newbie from Denmark in Scandinavia
Hi all
I have decided to buy an ereader and almost ordered a Kindle 2 yesterday. I wanted to buy the Kindle because I can use it outside the US. But the I heard about the B&N Nook and wanted to buy that one instead. I then discovered that the Nook is only available in the US ![]() Today I heard about Calibre and hoped it could help me. But I can't seem to find out if it can. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a Nook outside the US (for example on ebay), then buy ebooks on Amazon, convert them via Calibre and then transfer them to the Nook? I am looking forward to using this forum in the future. Jakob |

from one noob to another welcome
you probably can buy a nook from outside the us but why would you? the wifi only connects to b&n wifi and you wouldn't be able to download books over a cell network. you might as well buy a sony reader or some other ereader. also, i think the kindle ebooks are drm protected so calibre wouldnt be able to convert them...... i think. |

Welcome to MR, jakobbokaj
![]() The E-book Reader Matrix in MR's Wiki is a good comparison chart that has links to the individual devices. Some things to consider before buying a device.. *Geographic restrictions when purchasing ebooks. ........Where you live determines which ebook stores are available to you and not all ebooks are available to be purchased in all countries.. (I know, I know .... but this information will be for non techies) *Right now you may be able to view the Kindle, Sony, B&N, etc book stores, but once you are registered geographic restrictions will apply (I know... please see note above) *Why do you want wifi? Consider if you will be able to use it in your country and that it is usually only for download of books. *Prices of ebooks in other countries may be more than the USD prices on the same sites. Prices seem to be set by publishers who own the rights to the ebooks in the various counties. *Calibre does conversion of formats when you start with a non DRM'd ebook. (most books you buy from the major book stores or the best sellers are DRM'd) *members have discussed buying and converting DRM's ebooks but this involves stripping DRM (which may or may not be legal in your country--and MR doesn't give step by step instructions) This also involves some knowledge of scripts. So, I would say the first step is to search for the type of books you like to read. Are they available as ebooks? what format are they available in? are they available in your geographic area? at a price you would like to pay? Good Luck in your decision making process. Choosing a device to fit your individual needs will ensure that you enjoy your new device. |

Welcome to MR... I'm Danish as well, although I have lived in Australia for 25+ years..
I got an ereader which will display .epub formats... My reader (Hanvon 516) already have more than 2,100 books preloaded on it, but the format is not the best, even though it's readable. Geo Restrictions are really a pain in the butt..., but there's not much we can do about that, unless we go pirating. And I don't know how to do that, but I do enjoy the free/lowcost books you can find on this site. Last edited by lene1949; 01-03-2010 at 03:34 AM. Reason: clarification |

Hi Jakob and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for two years now and like it a lot.
