USB problem/fault - help urgenty needed please
Hi
I last connected my PRS 600 to my pc first thing Christmas day; I loaded 4 books on it. It was fully charged and I used it extensively for two days (Christmas day and Boxing day) before I got the low battery warning. I then tried to recharge it via the USB and got an error message to say that the USB on the device had failed. I thought it was because the battery was too low for the USB to charge it so didn't worry too much. I came home today and connected it to the mains charger, and it charged fine, didn't take long though, less than 90 mins. But.... I am still getting the 'Failed USB' message, I have tried on 3 different PC's and none of them recognize my ebook, I get the same message on all PC's. I have tried different USB leads as well. The USB sockets on the PC's are fine as my 505 is recognized on all machines. Does anyone know what’s wrong? I few weeks ago I had a problem when my 505 wasn't recognized (no error message though), in the end I did a soft reset and wiped the ebook and it works fine now. Are these machines just unstable? I just can't believe that I now have a faulty 600 as well. Any advice would be appreciated, as I just want an ebook that works properly. I use Calibre to load books and the Sony software for pictures. I don’t have any MP3 files on my 600. I just don’t understand what has gone wrong. Thanks |

So have you already tried to reset the device? Do you use a sd-card or a memory stick? If yes, remove it and try it again. If nothing helps you will have to contact Sony's support because the USB-connector (or another part) could be damaged. Btw. what kind of charger is your "main charger"? Is it a original sony charger?

This might be over your head, so feel free to ignore this. But these readers do run a Linux operating system. If you were to download a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix 'n Friends. The idea is to download any LiveCD .ISO file, then burn it to a CD (they come in handy to fix things all the time in my world). Anyways, then you have your computer boot to the LiveCD (none of your data will be lost doing any of this).
With Linux booted up, opening up any Terminal Window (like xterm) will allow you to give us a lot more information via this form regarding what is going on with your USB connection. Launch a Terminal Plug in your Reader via USB. type into the terminal Quote:
What that accomplishes is simply taking the guess work out of what is going on behind the scenes when you plug your Reader into your computer. 'dmesg' will give you some sort of message about it which if you copy to this forum, I'll take a look at it. Plus it would help you get a replacement from Sony by going the extra mile to make sure it's faulty. |

It sounds very likely that the Reader's USB port is faulty. I think you should contact Sony support.

I did a reset as per the troubleshooting guide and it now works fine, I can only assume it was an issue with trying to charge it through the USB.
Thanks everyone for trying to help |
