What can I do about ...

I have a double problem with my Sony 505. First it got put aside for a while and the battery completely drained. I set it up to recharge but forgot about it so it appeared to have died rather than recharged. With a bit of help from Sony, I was able to get it going again. But the tech did recommend that I just partially recharge it, let it drain part way and recharge, etc for a while. Unfortunately it seems to take very little time to [apparently] recharge. This isn't a major issue because I still don't use it as much as I might and if it appears to had discharged the battery I can find something else to read. I tried to find something comparable to the tech's suggestion in my manual so I could have specific steps to follow but could not. Any suggestions on what I should do? Possibly I have screwed up the battery entirely and it doesn't much matter?

Second issue: most the stuff I have on my device is from Gutenberg Project. I haven't invested in any $ ebooks for the same reason I haven't bought any dead tree books. Although there are some books I might want to read and reread or refer to, there are not many. Mostly I borrow from the library.

But there is one author I do consider rereadable (Terry Pratchett) and I thought I might start collecting his books in eFormat. I ended up buying one in the Adobe Digital Editions format. As instructed, I downloaded ADE and was able to install it on my Mac, but have not figured out how to install it on the Sony.

I found the ADE not particularly helpful - can't even seem to figure out how to dump the test book which I downloaded to make sure I could read the format. I admit that although decades ago, I enjoyed poking around new software trying to find out what tricks it could do, I now just want the app to do what I was told it would do.

I did some exploring for information on the Adobe forums, but I didn't find anything that seemed useful. Someone mentioned that the ADE did not recognize the Sony which would appear to be my problem and someone else said he used Caliber. I also use Caliber but Caliber does not recognize the *.ascm files.

Thanks for any suggestions on either issue.

I don't know about your first problem - with charging (though I've noticed people have said a wall charger sometimes helps with charging problems?) - but I've had the same trouble with ADE and a Mac.

(Please note, there are other people on these boards a lot more tech-savvy than I am, so there might be an easier solution to this problem, but this was my experience, and I hope it might help!)

You don't need to install anything on your Sony (unless you need the firmware update for reading ePub, which as far as I'm aware you'll need to use a Windows computer for.) With a Mac, ADE isn't going to recognize your reader and move your files for you, but you can drag and drop them. There should be a folder in your documents labeled Digital Editions, where you'll find book files.

What I think you do need to do is authorize your reader to your ADE account, so that you'll be able to use the files. For this, I borrowed a Windows computer, installed ADE on it, plugged in my reader, and was prompted to authorize it. So I did, and then I went back to my Mac, moved the files to the reader by drag-and-dropping, and was able to read them.

There are probably other ways to do this, but this was the one that worked for me.

Thanks. I appreciate less techiness so was able to follow your instructions. I updated the firmware and put ADE on a computer running Windows XP but it still does not recognize the 505. I have shut down and will try again a bit later.

Adobe Digital Editions works on Mac and PC.
Once installed make sure your Sony reader is plugged in while Adobe DE is running and authorise both the computer and Sony reader.
Once they are authorised when you purchase a PDF or EPUB ebook from any ebook store selling Adobe DRM ebooks they will appear in Adobe DE.
If your reader is plugged in when you make the purchase it will automatically be recognised by Adobe DE and you can drag it straight from Adode DE onto your Sony reader.

This issue has been back burnered for awhile but I finally sat down and discovery that there was a software update I missed. That installed on the Sony, ADE finally recognized the Reader and I was able to authorize it. I tried to move the purchased volume onto the Reader - is there decent documentation for the non specialist on ADE? - and although it appears to be on the Reader (I attached it to a computer which did not have the volume and the book appears to be there) but my menus do no show the book. Now what? <G>

Happy New Year
