Hello from WA

Hello,

I have been a fan of the Ebook concept for a while now.

My first distinct memory was about 8 years ago. I had a Palm for Business and was learning how to install solar panels. One of the instructors was explaining that the electrical code was difficult to memorize. I asked the question 'Why can't you just download the building codes into a palm or other device so that you can reference it when ever you need it?' The question stumped him.

Now, I find myself looking at the idea of an electronic book fascinating. I read mostly when I am camping so the book needs to be a little tough. I perfer non-fiction and classics while my wife prefers fiction. It would be nice to add notes and use PDFs however that is not a dealbreaker. I am just trying to figure out what will be the best device for our family.

Welcome to Mobileread Deadcptflint. As you may have guessed from reading some of the posts, we all love our ebook readers whichever brand they might be.

An important consideration for choosing the perfect solution for you is "where will you be getting your ebooks" as ebook prices and availability may definitely influence your choice. Since you are in the U.S., check out your local public library. (if you're in Washington state, several libraries have good ebook selections) If you want to read ebooks from the library with the least fuss, then you will need to choose an ebook reader that is compatible with drm'd epub and pdf format ebooks. (unless you want to do some manipulation on the book to remove the drm)

If you will purchase most of your ebooks, then Amazon currently has the largest selection and cheaper prices.

If you have any specific questions, just ask. This is a great forum.

cheers

Welcome to MobileRead, matt.

Its a lot harder to choose now than when I started 1 1/2 yrs ago.

If your local library is well stocked with e-books in epub or pdf format, you might want to look at the Sony's.......very easy to read library books on them.

If you purchase most of your books, you might want to look at teh Kindles..prices are great, and remember only the best sellers are at $9.99. Others a much less.

You have a 30 day return policy with them, no re-stocking fee, just pay return shipping.

And don't forget the thousands of ebooks available here formatted by our own members, and they are for any brand of e-book reader......or even on your computer.

Good luck with your choice.

Thank you Leep, it never dawned on me to check the local library. My wife's boss has a Kindle and I am hoping that she will get a chance to test drive it soon to see what it is like. I know that I am a few months away unless my wife really pushes it. I am looking forward to seeing what the next six months will bring.

Hi Matt and welcome to MobileRead. There are plenty of protective covers available that you can use with an eBook reader when camping and the like. I have an MEdge Leisure cover for my Sony 505. Although not waterproof, it is water resistant and well padded. i use it at the gym and on travel and, so far, it's done the job.

I like the water resistant. I live in a dusty enviroment so I look for anything to reduce the impact on my electronic devices. Right now I am looking hard at the Sony's Daily edition so I wonder how it will respond to the touch screen.

Many of the libraries are adding more and more epub and pdf format ebooks. Readers that handle these well include the Sony products and the Astak Pocket Pro which I bought for my sister. She loves it, and I was especially impressed with the nice compact size and feel. If you decide on the Kindle, you will have to remove the drm to read library epub and pdf ebooks, and manipulate the metadata to read the library mobipocket format ebooks. These are not difficult tasks, but people have differing opinions on the ""rights" of doing said same. That being the case, I love my Kindle.

cheers

Right now, I am waffling between the Kindle and the Sony Daily. I am just waiting for the release date to see what the screen quality will look like on the Daily.
