New Computer for Me.. soon
Well, my current desktop is soon to be replaced. It has served me well over the years, but is getting a bit long in the pins. (har har)
The current old fogey is an AMD Athlon 64 754-pin 3200+, paired with an ATI X1950XT 512MB AGP video card, with 1GB DDR ram and a Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card. For the most part, it's almost as maxed as I can get an AGP mobo system. It'll play Crysis, although I have to be running everything almost minimum to get any kind of decent framerates. Here's my new system, so far. AMD Phenom IIx4 965 3.4GHz Black Edition AM3 Raidmax Quantum-RX 700W power supply 4GB (2x2GB) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 RAM Cooler Master Storm Scout case. I have 2 more essential pieces to get... ASUS Crosshair III Forumla AM3 790FX mobo XFX ATI HD5870 1GB video card. Although, I will most likely have to wait until after the holidays in order to afford these last 2 pieces. The total cost is going to be somewhere around $1050, which is not too bad for a system. This one should last me another 5 years. |

I'd get more RAM if I were you. 64-bit operating systems (are you going to run 64-bit Windows 7?) can use all the RAM you can throw at them, and it'll all be a lot smoother for multitasking large applications with 8GB than with 4.

Oops. I forgot. I upgraded last year and added another gig of RAM. I needed it with Adobe CS4 installed.
I have Win7 RC installed right now on my Athlon. I'll keep my current SATA harddrive, and upgrade my current IDE to a SATA at a later date. Once the mobo comes in, I'll test the IDE drive. I have heard that the only negative thing about this mobo is a disappointing IDE support. Not a problem for me. Sometime around April or so, once the funds allow, I'll be adding another 4GB (2x2GB) (there are 4 ram slots on the ASUS mobo). My current system I'll then give to my younger brother. His system can't even play Doom 3! ![]() |

Not sure. I gave him Two Worlds and he said it was very very choppy on minimum.
Poor guy. Maybe I should pass a collection plate for him ![]() |
