eReader Shortage
According to the CNN Web site (http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2009/11...-the-holidays/), consumers are facing an eReader shortage this Christmas season.

They mention the demand for the Nook exceeding B&Ns expectations and Sony not being able to guarantee they can deliver their eBook readers in time for the holiday. They asked for comments from Amazon but got no response.

Amazon is still showing both new and refurbished, Kindle2's international, and DX's with immediate "super savings" shipping.

Even one day shipping for an added fee.

Perhaps they meant to say "some ebook readers are in short supply..........."?

No, I think they meant "we asked every e-book reader maker we've heard of (all three of them) and two responded."

Yes, but are those based on existing stock that the company already had, or based on production of new units? It sounds to me like it's generally the newer readers coming out (Nook, Sony Reader, DR800) that are having the shortage. That may point the finger at a manufacturing backlog. Established devices (Kindle, etc) may have already built up enough stock on hand to satisfy demand.

Keep in mind that all of these devices get their screens from the same source. The shortage may actually be coming from PVI, which would effect all devices. It's just that new devices are more vulnerable to this because they don't have existing stock.

Note, this would not be the first time that PVI was unable to meet demand. There have been confirmed manufacturing backlogs from them in the past.
