Palm Addicts overview of PalmOS game emulators

Gaming is alive and well on the PalmOS platform. Some of the more interesting applications are the game emulators that let you play old console games on your pda or smartphone.

Henry Kong provides a very nice overview of the various game emulation options you have over at Palm Addicts. If you are interested in getting started with emulators on PalmOS, it's definitely worth a look.

How could he fail to mention LJP/LJZ? His review has breadth, but lacks depth.

I think his review was meant more as an overview. And one of the best things about the online mobile computing community is that we have people like yourself that can fill in the details like this on an amazing number of topics. Something that no one person or site could ever do themselves.

To be honest, some of our best topics of discussion can come up because one of my posts is lacking in information or perspective, and you guys jump right in with the "rest of the story!" I love to see that happen.

As for LJP/LJZ, is that only for the Zodiac, or for any PalmOS device?

And can anyone add any thoughts on some of the emulators you've tried and found to work well, especially for a beginner?

I've always wondered, though... for those who don't have a Zodiac, especially those with devices with small buttons such as on a Treo, is it practical to play these games from the controller perspective?

Any OS5 device, I believe. I've tried LJP and it's slow, a bit buggy, and can't play SNES/Genesis games without UDMH (Unlimited Dynamic Memory Hack) which is shareware, and theoretically a bit dangerous to use...

(It may not need this on the Zodiac - I'm not certain, as it's a gaming machine so it may already have something in place to provide enough dyanmic memory for games.)

On my Z2 there's no need for UDMH. LJZ play very well, including Sega Genesis and SNES.

Right now game emulation on my Z2 is the primary reason I'm still a Palm OS guy. Some of these PPC companies are putting out hardware that has several excellent features and I'm just waiting for Mark/Space to support Windows Mobile 5. (I might be waiting for a while...)
