Kindle Bestseller PreOrder Price Drops
I thought there was a thread for the $9 pre-order books from the current hardcover price war, but could not find it, so apologies if this is a duplicate thread.
The pre-order price for Pirate Latitudes, by Michael Crichton (November 24, 2009), has dropped from $9.00 to $7.20 in the Kindle store. Book Description An irresistible adventure of swashbuckling pirates in the New World, a classic story of treasure and betrayal. The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there's a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease - or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it. Word in port is that the galleon El Trinidad, fresh from New Spain, is awaiting repairs in a nearby harbor. Heavily fortified, the impregnable harbor is guarded by the bloodthirsty Cazalla, a favorite commander of the Spanish king himself. With backing from a powerful ally, Hunter assembles a crew of ruffians to infiltrate the enemy outpost and commandeer El Trinidad, along with its fortune in Spanish gold. The raid is as perilous as the bloodiest tales of island legend, and Hunter will lose more than one man before he even sets foot on foreign shores, where dense jungle and the firepower of Spanish infantry stand between him and the treasure. |

Perhaps a moderator could change the thread title to Kindle Bestseller PreOrder Price Drops? or something. The ebooks are running up a big advantage over paper on the pre-order price war.
The pre-order price for Going Rogue: An American Life, by Sarah Palin (December 26, 2009), has dropped from $9.00 to $7.20 in the Kindle store. Book Description One year ago, Sarah Palin burst onto the national political stage like a comet. Yet even now, few Americans know who this remarkable woman really is. On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world. As chief executive of America's largest state, she had built a record as a reformer who cast aside politics-as-usual and pushed through changes other politicians only talked about: Energy independence. Ethics reform. And the biggest private sector infrastructure project in U.S. history. And while revitalizing public school funding and ensuring the state met its responsibilities to seniors and Alaska Native populations, Palin also beat the political "good ol' boys club" at their own game and brought Big Oil to heel. Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin wasn't a packaged and over-produced candidate. She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom was serving his country in a yearlong deployment in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs. Palin's hometown story touched a populist nerve, rallying hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to the GOP ticket. But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her "refreshing" and "honest," a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin. In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom's-eye view of high-stakes national politics-from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost. Going Rogue traces one ordinary citizen's extraordinary journey and imparts Palin's vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth. |

The ultimate question: Will the publisher sell enough copies to earn back the advance? If not, will the publisher then try to recoup losses by coming out with a brand new ebook device, perhaps called the You Betcha! that comes preloaded with the gossip according to sarah (I can see it now -- a screen saver of sarah saying "you betcha!", a wireless link to the Michelle Malkin book club for further reads, and a TTS system that repeatedly says "click original intent to start"). ![]() |

Political philosophy aside, I think Palin is genuinely popular - because many people can relate to her.
The Democrats, on the other hand, offer women like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, who don't remind you of anyone you would like to have lunch with. |

I think it's sad that of all the strong political, Republican women who are out there, Palin was picked as the best representative of them -- when it turned out that perhaps her strong showing in AK might have been just a lack of press. |

It is also troublesome that there is a right-wing litmus test (there is also a left-wing litmus test but it seems to be quite a bit weaker than that of the right-wing). That's what voters in a traditionally republican congressional district in upstate New York face. The right forced out of the race the republican choice because she was not right enough for radio, Texas, and Alaskan conservatives -- none of whom vote or live in the district but all of whom have financial resources to spend. What America desperately needs is a third party composed of the middle/moderates/centrists, leaving the radical right to the republicans and radical left to the democrats. Most Americans are in the middle but aren't given a middle choice. |

Well, there's a contradictory post.
First, you assert that Palin isn't qualified to be President. Then, you complain that middle-of-the-road Americans aren't given a choice. Doesn't the problem with choice directly relate to your first assertion? If the only people "qualified" to be President are ivy-league educated lawyers who spend their lives entrenched in the political system, then you're right - middlers won't have many choices. Because working your way through the system to successfully become "qualified" to be President means playing the two-party game. I'm sorry, but according to the criteria set forth by our forefathers, Palin is indeed qualified. Your third party proposition requires tolerance of Palin-like candidates (in terms of background and not ideology) to break the two party stranglehold. |

It is because of ideological Palin-like candidates -- on both the left and the right -- that I think there is a need for a viable third party. With a viable national third party it is easier to tolerate the ideological Palins of the left and right. |
