Foyles Again

Once the biggest bookshop in London and, arguably, the most famous in the world, fusty ol' Foyles has entered the 21st Century and has opened an ebook store. Why so glum? Adobe Digital Editions is free, and it is not hard to remove Adobe DRM.

Why do you have to? Adobe DRM is "painless" and doesn't interfere in any way with the reading experience. Given that pretty much every device on the market (Amazon excepted) uses ePub these days, it doesn't restrict your ability to move a book between devices, so what's the problem?

Does the CyBook support ePub? I didn't think it did, though I've not tried.

It will with the new firmware which will be available, er, "soon"

. No, obviously you wouldn't use an ePub bookstore unless you had a device which supported ePub. My point was, though, that ePub DRM is very "non-intrusive" and really not a problem.

I love Foyles' London bookshop, and would like to support their ebook initiative; but I don't want to encourage an Adobe/DRM model - I'll shop elsewhere for now.

Their prices look okay, about the same level as Waterstones, but it's difficult to search for ebooks.

Cybook doesn't read Adobe-DRM ePub, ePub doesn't have a dictionary and I dislike Adobe (they began with PDF/DRM), so I don't think it's no pain.

Aah, I take it you've never had to have your authorization count reset due to harddrive failure and new equipment purchases only to be ignored by adobe. and you must never have had library books fail to open due to "known issues" that adobe has been working on for at least a year. Of all the popular drm systems, ADEPT is the most buggy and least likely to have issues resolved from the consumer end. I have never had these issues with mobipocket, ereader, or sony DRMed books.

If you can tell me where I can find a library in the UK which lends out eBooks, I'll be happy to try it for you. Sadly, such services are few and far between here.

So they're staying true to the Foyle's experience then.

To complete the similarity they'd need to add some code to trick you into looping around so you can never find the way out.
