Red reader in the UK
I e-mailed Sony to ask if there were any plans to sell the Red reader in the UK. The 505 was available in Red as a John Lewis (big UK department store) exclusive. I got the following reply:

I am hoping to pick one in NY at the end of month. If it won't work with ADE and the Sony Store (I am a gift voucher using US impersonator) then that would be a bad idea! Anyone had any real world experiences of a US Red version working outside the US with DRM protected material? Thanks! amjb |

I think they're just talking out of their, uh, rear ends. The hardware is identical, and even the software on the new models. The only thing that is different is price and warranty (and maybe packaging).

I've not got any experience with a US reader as I own a UK one, but as I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) that as long as you register it to the US store and not the UK one, you'll be fine.
You'll be able to purchase books from the US store but not the UK one. As they are the same hardware it may be possible to register the US reader to the UK store, but I'm not in a possition to check. |

Also, there's no UK store; I don't know about EBL 3 but EBL 2 connected you to Waterstones' regular site. Basically, install/change prefs to US in EBL and you get everything you can out of your Reader ![]() |

I think I remember reading they had plans to bring it over at some point, but in the UK the Sony software just directs you to Waterstones or WH Smith. These sell ePubs using Adobe's DRM which is an entirely different system to Sony's original setup. So yeah, the line about DRM is rear-gravy. |

the red 600's are available exclusive to John Lewis, same as before, they are on the site now.

Wouldn't go quite so far. The dutch website bol.com sells the red PRS-600 just fine, has been doing so for at least several weeks now (ever since I started looking at eReaders
![]() And yeah, I would expect the whole DRM line to be nonsense, but then again, you never know; Amazon has some pretty restrictive geographical limits in place, would not put it past Sony to follow suit. |

I have a red one I ordered in the US, I live in Germany, it works just fine. No DRM restrictions on the red that you would not have on the grey or the black.
Now, is Sony talking nonsense on purpose, or do they just have "eejits" answering their customer emails ? ![]() |
