Hello in TO
Yet another displaced Maritimer in the big T-dot. Got started with ebooks with Plucker & Mobipocket on a Palm IIIe around 2000. Picked up a Clie in 2003 for the same use after the previous one died. Acquired a Palm m105 and an iPAQ rx3115 in 2007 after the Clie died. Both of these are relatively old so I'm hoping they continue to survive better than the previous devices. I've been looking at ebook readers for a while. Sony Reader and Hanlin/Jinke-based devices are at the top of my list currently but as I'm heavily invested in massive PDFs as well I'm concerned if either of these can handle the display of 50,100,150MB PDFs. Functionality of Mobipocket dictionaries is another point of concern. So I'm still shopping. Cheers.

Welcome to MR!
What sort of content is in the PDFs? If it has lots of diagrams, formula etc then the Sony won't handle it brilliantly (I'm not sure if any of the other 5" & 6" screens will either, though). If it's just text, then the Sony 505 will certainly read larger PDFs in my experience. I've not tried any of the newer Sonys, so can't comment on them. |

TO, the T-dot are pseudonyms for Toronto. I'm not actually in Toronto proper but one of the cities that make up the GTA or Greater Toronto Area. But really, it's all just Toronto. At one time (and sometimes still) affectionately called by residents Toronto the Good and by other Canadians, mostly Maritimers such as myself, the Centre of the Universe, not so affectionately. Of course I've discovered that a number of Torontonians apply that appellation in the same manner to Edmonton. YYZ and YHZ are international airport codes for Toronto and Halifax respectively.
Regarding the PDFs, yes, they are heavily table and diagram based. Many are old scans so the PDFs were generated from TIFs or JPGs not from source text. Fortunately the newer trade journals are source-to-PDF. I would think that one of the Linux-based devices would handle .PS natively as well but haven't seen it listed as a supported format. Another thing that just struck me is the rendering of PDFs generated from AutoCAD .DWG that would otherwise be plotted to 11x17 or 32x36, etc. |

Hello YHZSFCYYZ, and
I'm the happy owner of a Sony 505, myself. That's quite a moniker you've got there. |
