New Sony PRS-505
Hi
Have wanted to try an e reader for ages. Main reason is I read 10-12 paperback novels on a fortnight's holiday and they weigh too much. Finally decided the Sony met my performance and value criteria. Just got it. Read the manual. Happy, I guess. Got a few issues already which I will post later. Cheers dread0 |

Hi dread0 and welcome to MobileRead. I gather you're from the UK. If so, there are lots of your countrymen about. And I've had a 505 since Jan 08 and really like it.

First Thoughts
Thanks for the welcome. Now that I have read the User Guide, I realise that I can only read ebooks downloaded to my PC on my reader. I sort of thought that I would be able to transfer via memory card to another reader. Hmm.

On a 505 you should be able to read them off of a memory card and transfer that card to another 505, 600 or 700 (and depending on format possibly to other brands of reader as well). Unless I'm not getting what you mean.

What I mean is I take 12 books with me and my wife takes 3. When she has finished hers she starts to read the ones I have already read. If she has her own 505 can I just transfer by SD card?

Should work fine provided if the books are DRM'd both readers are registered under the same Adobe ID (for ePub/PDF). If the books are not DRM'd it will work fine too.

Hope you soon feel comfortable with the 505, Dreado. I would, though, recommend a mains charger. The only problems I ever enountered were early on when I was using a USB cable and charging from the PC or laptop. It seems from advice here that one wee hitch using a USB is that, although the 505 battery icon might suggest a full charge, the unit's actually critically low on power. No probs since I started to charge from the mains -- and battery life is impressive. By the way, I got the mains charger with a range of very simple adapters for use anywhere in the world (handy for your holidays, and for me here in France). It was about twelve pounds and comes from www.gomadic.com. Cheers. Neil

You can, but just to put things into context, the Reader will hold a few hundred books in it's internal memory, so you may find that the simplest thing will be just load both readers with all the books you're taking and not worry about external cards. Another point is that you can't copy from the SD card to the internal memory without hooking it up to a PC to do so (or having a utility script pre-loaded on the SD card), so in practice, external cards aren't normally needed!
