Portable Charger for Readers :)

Basically, I thought this might be really useful for other people as well while I was charging my PRS-700, so I thought I'd post it on MR.

Excuse the crappy image from my iPhone, but basically this Charger is an interchangable charger for the iPhone/iPod/USB/mini-USB/DS Lite/Nokia/Sony Ericsson and if you request a PSP adapter (for free, which doubles as a Sony Reader charger). Definitely one of the most useful products I've purchased lately. It is also extremely small and light (smaller than iPhone).

The link to the product is proporta.com/power

Might also want to look at Dealextreme, that's where I got mine from. Takes 2xAA, outputs 5V via an USB plug, bought an USB -> PSP plug convertor with it.

Note: their prices are low, but it is usually low-quality stuff. That said, the things I bought from them so far haven't broken yet.

I thought about getting one from dealextereme as well but this 3400 turbo charger can actually charge the iPhone 2 or 3 times before the battery is depleted, while the Aa chargers fan only charge a depleted iPhone to about half bar

But I admit that the readers don't need anywhere as much power as the iPhone so to each their own

Its a shame the back of the 600 is not a solar panel - the ultimate green reader - turn it over to charge!

Let me get this straight. I have the Apple Ipod USB charger that I bought for $5 at DealExtreme. Is it safe to just plug the reader USB cable into it for charging? If that works why doesn't Sony just sell a accessory charger for the USB port rather than the 5.2 volt dc in?

Sony really seems to have nickel-and-dimed us on these readers; I just discovered that the included USB cable won't work with my portable HD - I think it only supports USB 1.1.

there are two types of mini usb cable. they seem to use a different wireing schematic, and its hard to find info about what uses what.

Well, all I can say for sure is that the USB cable for my portable HD works fine with the PRS-600, but if I plug the PRS-600 cable into the HD, the HD blinks once and turns itself off.

It's probably "safe" but it won't charge.

I recently purchased a powermonkey (someone @ MB recommended it) and I must say I LOVE it. It's truly portable power and charges all my electronics. The company name is PowerTraveller I think.

To answer my own question. I just tried it. It says USB connected but the red charging light does not come on. I then switched to the computer USB and it did come on after starting the eBook library program.
