Smile Greetings and salutations

Hello. I just discovered MobileRead. I am the author of the Jason Cosmo fantasy adventure series. One of my Loyal Readers let me know that he had recommended my new book, Hero Wanted -- which is available as a free download in multiple formats from Smashwords. So I joined to check that out because, like many authors, I'm a narcissistic egomaniac.

But I think I'll stick around, because I am fascinated by ebooks. I am old school enough to prefer reading print, but I do have a pretty extensive collection of books downloaded from Gutenberg Project and elsewhere that I read from time to time. I read them on my laptop or desktop, but am thinking of getting an iPod Touch so I can try out Stanza, etc.

Anyway ... hello. Glad to be here.

Hi Dan, welcome to MR!

We welcome all the authors as we can get! Maybe soon we'll have enough for a softball team!

Welcome to MobileRead, Dan!

Old school, huh?!? Believe me, once you start reading on a dedicated reading device, you'll be hooked. I have a hard time going back to paper books now. While you're here, be sure and check out all the free ebooks that have been lovingly formatted by some of our members. We also have a Writers' Corner forum that you might find interesting. Enjoy!

Happy Reading (and writing )!

Hi Dan!
Narcissistic egomaniac, hey? Well I love those, so welcome!!

When my father got his Sony, I was revolted at the thought of abandoning paper books and almost got into fights with him about it.
Then I joined this forum to tease him.
Then I fell in love with people here.
Then I started reading more an more about the liseuses.
Then I discovered all that's available to read for free.
Then I decided I needed a liseuse.
Then PilotBob (a member and moderator here) gave me his old Sony 500.

Now, I'm crazy about it!

Enjoy this Brave New World of literature!

Hello Dan -- welcome to MobileRead. We love to have authors drop in to visit and talk about their books.

I read 50-60% paper books and the rest on my Kindle & Sony readers. I consider them both "print" and given that the paper books I read are mostly mass-market paperbacks, there's nothing special when it comes to fonts, page layouts, etc. to make those a "better" book than the electronic one. So why am I continuing to not only *read* paper books, but also to buy new ones? Because I enjoy my online book swapping group and wouldn't be able to play with them if I were exclusively reading electronic editions.

For me, it's all about the *story*, not the physical medium. If the story is good and it's accessible, then I'm happy, Electronic books have the strong benefit of being able to carry many of them in a very small space. They have the downside of not being transferable. If I'm going to spend more than a pittance for an electronic book, it's because it is one that I want to keep or it's one only available in a more-expensive hardback edition & I can't wait for it to come out in paperback. Likewise, if I'm going to buy a hardback book, it will be because it is a collectible. But I'm not going to *invest* in collecting paperbacks; I'm going to read those and pass them along.

And hey! I find it much easier to read at the dinner table when I can prop the Kindle against a salt shaker & reach over every once in a while to hit the Next Page button. With a paper book, I have to put one or more utensils on top of the book to hold it open. And, if I splash some ketchup, it's much easier to wipe it off of the Kindle!

So -- welcome to MobileRead. I've followed the link to your book on Smashwords and will take a look at it -- fantasy novels make up about 20% of my annual reading, so I'm always looking for another good book and author.

Hi! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and advice. Sorry for the time lag -- I was traveling the last couple of weeks and avoiding the internet. :-)

I have (as you can see on my LibraryThing page) thousands of print books, mostly paperback. I tend to be a keeper and probably still own 99% of the all books I ever bought, including college text books. Of course, I also still have 99% of the books I've ever downloaded too -- and they do take up a lot less space!

I agree with Elsi -- it's the content I want most of the time, not the format. Most of my reading is still paper-based from habit and inertia. But I look forward to being part of the MobileRead community and learning more about ebooks.
