Bonjour from Paris

Hi all !

I'm living in Paris (France, not Texas ) and have been lurking from some time on eReaders. Although I'm not sure yet what I'll get, I guess my choice will be the Sony PRS-600 unless I linger long enough to see more new products on the market.

I'd like a eReader so that I don't have to choose the books I'll read prior to going on vacations. And the reason why I picked the PRS-600 is that I mainly read English books, so the builtin dictionary will be a great advantage compared to good old fashioned books ! (I just hope Sony won't force the French dictionary if it's purchased in France...)

Read you around...
Vincent.

Welcome to Mobileread!

The Sony 600 is getting mixed reviews. The touchscreen layer does reduce the clarity of the display.

While the lack of a firmware update has been irritating, I'd suggest you look at the Bookeen CyBook and Opus. In Mobipocket mode (Cybook now and Opus later) they offers dictionary support, and they both have better screens than the Sony.

Welcome to the forum, Krapo!

Do you know about the Paris Apéro on Saturday 19 September?
See this thread:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50342

I believe that Hadrien is planning to bring a 600, a 300 and an XO. Zelda will bring a 700 and her Ebookwise. I'll bring my 500 and my 505 (if it's back from being serviced).

salut krapo ! et bienvenue.

like patricia said, if you come to our next apéro, you can see a lot of different liseuses and test them out for yourself, including the new models from sony. from what i have seen, the 600 will have no french dictionary installed (arg !) however you can choose between the US and UK english ones (you can switch back and forth whenever you like in the settings). hopefully, one day we'll be able to have as many dictionaries as we like, of all languages, and use them all in parallel. i will be getting a 600 myself, principally for the dictionary (i like the notes too).

anyway, welcome to the forum, and hope to see you at the apéro ! please leave a message in the thread if you plan to come. bonne lecture !

Bonjour Vincent, bienvenue !

I have to smile because I call my kids "les crapauds", but anyway.. Welcome to Mobileread, you will have great fun and get plenty of very useful informations. People here are really nice, and funny too, I must say.

Regarding your lurking, the 600 is probably a good choice, you can't do wrong with Sony. But the lurking never lasts long here

Welcome to MobileRead, Vincent!

I love my 700 and am looking forward to receiving my 600 soon. I've really missed the dictionary support I had with my EBW1150.

Happy Reading!

Thank you all for the warm welcome !

@pdurrant: Thanks for the tips. You're right, I'll look other models more in details prior to making my final decision. The Dictionary is really a must have for me, and the touchscreen is a "really nice to have" as it provides quick word lookup. If there was not this glare/reflection proclem, I would already have bought the PRS-600 (provided I could source it !)

@aceflor & Zelda: To tell the truth, my wife & kids call me "crapaud", so in return I sometime call my kids "les tétards"...

@Patricia & Zelda: Thanks a lot for the invite, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately we already have guests on this day so it would be insensitive of me to have the apero outside !

Read you around,
Vincent.

i've seen it in person already and the screen is really quite useable, there is a bit more reflection than on a screen with no touch layer but it doesn't bother me (i have a 700, though, and that one didn't bother me either... the 600 screen is definitely better than the 700, for contrast and reflection).

personally i've tried models with and without touch screen, and i really love the comfort and convenience of the touch screen, now i would really have a hard time giving it up. and dictionary is really important to me too, so i'm definitely getting a 600. (it doesn't mean i won't be happy to see a touch-screen model which retains the display appearance of the "naked" e-ink screen though !)

but i guess you'll go to the sony store Georges V to see it yourself, then you can decide what you think. just a word of caution, i don't know this sony store, but often in big stores you have really bright overhead halogen spots ; those are the worst possible lighting for this liseuse. try to take a look in daylight if you can (near a window, at the least) to get a better idea.
