Odd question regarding which one to buy...

I would LOVE some input / discussion on this thread:

I have been on a mini crusade for sometime now looking for a mobile reader. Its funny how you can start out thinking you know what you want, only to discover you didn't. LOL

Had a PRS 505, nice unit, but ended up sending it back. The cost of eBooks and the lack of connectivity were a turn off for me. Perhaps i didn't give it long enough.

I'm not as much interested in eBooks as I am being able to get online content. Podcasts are of interest to me (but could easily take back seat to my ipod classic), as well as "read" materials like RSS feeds and news sites. Also interested in reading PDF files from work realted subjects or self printed from web sites.

Something simple to either update or load would be desirable. Ultimately a wireless device would be preferred.

I'm not saying I don't want to read books (I do want that option), but my interest in the other areas outweighs the "book desire". And not completely sure I want something in a large format (Kindle DX), although an online newspaper subscription would be a possibility if they were offered (right now my local paper doesn't offer).

So it seems my desire for a reader leans more towards a PC than an e-reader, but I don't want to be tied to a notebook or even my net-book that I travel with.

Any ideas or suggestions welcome. My thoughts are I am so weird in my thinking that there isn't anything available. My initial thought is something like an iPod Touch, but a little larger format.

Happy reading,

chaz

Reading this, I really think you should go with an Iliad. That was my first thought. PDF's are generally "in large format", it has a wifi connection and you can even annotate your documents.

If the primary concern is getting news feeds and similar content, you can use Calibre to download them (using the Recipes feature) and transfer them to any device you like.

I haven't found a good solution to the PDF issue.

Easily the most versatile device you can buy is an iPod touch. Alternatively something like an Archos 5 is larger, but the software support on the iPod is dramatically better. Archos can surf over wifi, supports most modern audio and video formats (not mkv or ogm, some video codecs you need to pay for), read pdf's, and if you're willing to accept more weight, comes in sizes up to 250 GB.

It's sounds like you're the customer for the mythical Apple iTablet.

There are once again strong rumours that Apple are about to produce something between an iPod Touch and a MacBook Air.

I have no idea is the rumours are right this time, but perhaps it's something to keep an eye on.
