oh mighty forum I throw myself upon the mercies of your collected wisdom!

this really is serious, even though I am fairly certain it will gain legs of its own.

I've made no secret of the animosity between myself and my coworkers (the one in particular). almost everything I have said has been correct, come to pass, etc., etc. well today pretty much takes the cake. the rectifier (an important electric transformer type device) for our equipment keeps blowing everytime the AC cranks up. I have had to call back to the east coast to the company who holds that contract to get someone local dispatched to do this. just that has been several hours of headache. we have tried to take everything off of those circuits and put them on others and have electric power cables crisscrossed all over the building. equipment has taken REALLY hard hits with the stuff going down.

ok, so what say you? since I have been here I have fussed about leaving the door to this facility open. frick and frack sit at the front of the building and like to prop the door open so they can chat up people as they come by. when I mentioned that this was hard on the equipment, and should not be done, the worst one of the two whined in excess and said he did not like to feel "closed in". the boss kind of shrugged and told me not to push it. I told her again it just was not a good idea, and let it go.

I'm about 90% certain that the abuse of making the fans work extra hard for so long is the culprit behind the issue. I'm alos equally fairly certain that the days toll once all the lost work, damaged equipment, expedited emergency repair call etc etc is going to be a rather weighty cost. is it appropriate at this point for me to say "told ya!" and is it appropriate to say this to people other than my boss who happens to be on leave?

I would write it all down. Dates, Times, who you told, who you talked to, what your ideas were, etc..

This way, when it finally all comes down, you can go to your boss and say:

"Here. This is a journal. On this day I talked to Frick and Frack about the doors, the fan, etc... This was their response. This was your response when you were informed. This was what the East Coast company told me, which I also explained to you on these dates here. This is what our local repairman said on these dates. I have the entire documentation of why our company has spent xxx Thousands of dollars on repairs, and how we could have saved this money."

yep, that was going to be part of the general plan. I just want to be able to do the *neener neener* bit so badly and then of course watch frick receive his just reward

What you might do, since you've done all you can with both frick, frack, and your supervisor, is write it all up and sent it to upper mgmt. Not as a "gonna get my boss in trouble" msg, but a "I'm trying to save this company money and my boss isn't helping" msg

Yes, the tone of any communication is very important. Really senior managemnt hate whistleblowers and people who rock the boat. But if F&F are costing them enough money, they might eventually decide to let them go.

But I would be actively looking for another job. This outfit does not sound well-managed or responsive to common-sense.

Opening doors and windows in an airconditioned room will give the aircon extra work to do. Depending on airflow, the temperatures outside the room etc, the rating of the aircon units etc, this can give it a lot more extra work to do. Which can lead it to fail. Which can then cause the equipment it's supposed to be cooling to fail. Or puts too much load on the circuit causing something to blow.

So yup, perfectly appropriate to say told ya Or at least explain why the problem's happening and let them work it out

yeah, that's what I want to do, I jusst have that little niggling voice (that sounds a lot like my boss) asking why I went over her head. simple truth is there have been so MANY instances like this, that I am not sure when you just keep looking the other way.

If your boss already know about your objections, I'd think it would be best not to show such pedantry as a journal. If it turns out that them leaving the door open you can easily say "I told you so" to your boss without coming off as someone who monitors and records every little detail for later use. It makes people uneasy if they get that feeling imo.

If you really need to justify it in a diplomatic way, don't forget you can't tell your boss right now given she's on leave.

Good point, Am. "I would have told you, but you weren't here, so I went to upper mgmt".

Urgh. Not a nice situation to be in, but keep thinking of the pension plan. (More than a few people where I am are in a similar situation - somehow we get a local council pension, despite not being part of the govt in any way... OK - we were once, sort of, but that was many, many years back)

it would be whiney if you didnt have any financial reasoning, and only "gee boss, they won't shut the door"

But you have a serious financial reason behind it. It will not be whiney at all.

Depends how you present it to them. If you go for the "I'd tell my boss as she was aware of my misgivings, but she's not here right now and it needs to be sorted before it costs us more money" approach, then probably not.
