Ebook Fomatting

I have had my UK PRS-505 for about 2 days. It comes with 100 classic books in Sony LRF format on a CD. So far I have flashed the Fontin font onto my reader making it much nicer to read. The thing is, that these classic books only use around 4.5 inches of the screen because the margins are so big. I downloaded this book formatted as LRF by HarryT:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ghlight=worlds

It has excellent formatting and a small margin, using the screen to it's full potential. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there anyway to reformat the Sony books to fill the entire screen, or are they protected ?

2. Do purchased LRF/Epub books only use this 4.5 inch area, or are they well formatted ?

Thanks Matt.

You can reformat them with Calibre so they have smaller borders.

If I try to convert one of the LRF files from the Sony disc, I get the following message:

'Could not convert 1 of 1 books, because no suitable source format was found'

Does this mean the file is protected ? Or am I doing something wrong ?

All of my free classics from Sony are DRM'd BBeB, or LRX, which cannot be converted to my knowledge.

Welcome to the 505 Matt!

1. With the free books on the CD, probably not. As someone pointed out, they're DRM'd. A non protected file can be reformatted in calibre. Don't despair though, these free 100 books you received are public domain books, and are available free just about anywhere, including here for the most part. If there's one you really want to read, search the uploaded files forums here or head over to Project Gutenberg.

2. No, luckily they don't. It depends on the publisher and all that, but from my experience most purchased books will fill the screen as you'd want them to.

The Sony "classics" are machine conversions and, generally speaking, rather poorly formatted. You'll find much nicer versions of pretty much all of them here on MR.

A third question if I may

I've used calibre to convert to epub, in order to get good formatting for project gutenberg text files. The epub when loaded, never uses the fontin font which I hacked in. LRF files created with calibre do use this font, but have worse formatting. Is there anyway to make the epub do the same without editing the .css file ?

Thanks again

without editing the css file, no. the good news is, it's really easy to do that using calibre, which you seem to be comfortable with, and you can even add it as a conversion default, then you don't have to add the code for each book.

take a look at this thread for very detailed instructions.

If there are any of the 100 classic books that are not already in the MR library for the Sony, let us know and we'll see what we can do to get them there.
