Juxta says "Hi!"
Hi!
Hello everyone. I want a reader but I don't want to spend £200 on it. Want to build my own. Anyone done that? Cheers, Juxta |

Hi Juxta, welcome to MR!
![]() Sorry I can't help with your question, but there's probably someone here who can. If you don't get any answers here in "Introduce Yourself", try one of the more technical forums. |

concerning the ebookwise, i bought one from an ebay seller who will ship outside of the US (i am in france), you just have to realise that you can't use the garantee if you have a problem with it, but i haven't in over a year and a half. you can find details in the ebookwise forum. also you'd have to buy a power adapter to charge it but those are not too expensive and you can use a generic multi-tip one (details in the ebookwise forum about that as well). having said this, the ebookwise has many great qualities however it also has some flaws, format support being the main one as you mentioned. if you're willing to do some converting to get your books into the native format it's still a workable option, and the new ebookwise conversion software will accept (drm-free) epub as a source format which is nice. pdfs will definitely pose a problem, however that is true with all readers, the sony 700 being the 6" device which handles them the best but still not ideal ; if possible it's best to avoid pdfs as an ebook format. for the price it's a good device and the ergonomy is really excellent. however i find it too heavy and bulky to carry around with me and ended up getting a sony 700 as well which is smaller, lighter, reads epub natively, and has many of the features i really appreciate in the eb1150 (touch screen navigation, search, notes...). :groan! ![]() |

Thanks guys for welcoming me, and some solid advice.
I have been looking through the forum, and I haven't found anything about building your own. I did find a great thread about what people would like to have their dream ereader do and I do agree with most of it! I think I will go ahead and make my own. I think I could make one for £50-75. You can get digital photo frames for £25-35 that not only display photos, but play MP3s and videos and some have wi-fi connections and even remote controls. So it should be possible to turn them into ereaders with a little hacking. Of course that will not be an e-ink reader, but it will be lighter than laptops or netbooks, which I considered, 'cause you can get one for same price as the newest Sony ereader. But they weigh the same as laptops, so not comfortable in bed or holding like a book. Zelda_pinwheel: If you do find that article about that guy who built one I would love to read it! I will publish my success - or failure, when finished. I am going on holiday in August so I won't be doing anything till September. I am scouting the Internet for some more info but haven't found anything so far. If you guys come across any articles or references I would love to hear about it. |
