HEMOSTATS, I got me new HEMOSTATS!!!
The single most useful modern tool (in my opinion), I present the hemostat. I used to have ready access to tons of them while I was working in labs or hospitals, but when I left that line of work mine began to disappear. I suspect, but can never prove, that friends were taking them to use as the ultimate roach clip.
I was down to my very last one, and every time I set it down I'd freak thinking I'd lose it. So, I found a really good online source (yes, they are Pakistani, and those are notorious for not holding up too well under constant autoclaving, but I don't use mine under sterile conditions anymore). Even with shipping they were only about $3.00 each. Marvelous for quilting, upholstering, and for working on computers. I'm told they also make a great roach clip, but I wouldn't know about that since my asthma makes smoking dope an extremely bad idea. |

You lucky girl! Reminds me of the time a dentist left an oral dental pick in a house my parents purchased. Still have it. It's absolutely wonderful for fine detail cleaning work on fossils.....

TSA tried to confiscate my hemostats once. I normally check my suitcase, but this was a short flight and waiting for the luggage would add substantially to my travel time. I had forgotten that they were in my case -- and because they looked like scissors, TSA wanted to take them away.
It took some fast talking and inflating the actual cost to convince them to let me keep them. |

Sorry, m'am, but it looks like your husband was hemostated. Either that, or he was attacked by a horde of extremely angry pincher bugs. Last edited by RickyMaveety; 07-09-2009 at 05:09 PM. |

http://www.hobbytool.com/dentaltools.aspx It's called "Papa John's Toolbox," and so far my experience with them has been first rate. Not surgical quality, but they'll do the job. |

dental picks are the single best device to clean a nipple with.
now that everyone is gulping and glancing about nervously... the nipple on a black powder rifle or pistol's trigger. those nipples tend to get clogged and dirty all the time! |

There are no finer 'micro tools' for the home hobbyist than those used by dentists and doctors. I have several different sizes and configurations of hemostats (mosquito, Crile, Kelly, etc.,) and various dental picks that I inherited from my father, an oral surgeon.
Although I usually don't practice medicine (I really believe that organ transplants should be left to professionals,) I do use these tools often when doing household repairs, experiments with stuff too delicate for my fat fingers to deal with, and yes, sometimes even splinter removal! Very handy to have around! Stitchawl |

I had to Google to find out what they were, but hemostats look as thoughthey could be a very useful sewing clamp/mini wrench.
I am now extremely tempted to go and acquire some. |

I agree with Ricky - one of the most useful tools ever made. My dad has 3 or 4 of them and I've never seen any since I moved away from home.

Nothing better to get those pesky hair clogs out of the vacuum. Seriously, I love the things. They even work well to hold a match so you can light a bunch of candles without burning your fingers.

Hemostats, also known as kellys. Do you prefer curved or straight?
