505 and comic PNGs
Just a quick question about how the 505 would handle this. I have a bunch of comic books but not in cbr or PDF format. They're essentially individual png picture files. How would that work on the Sony 505? Could each set of comics (about 30 files each) be put into an individual folder or would I just end up with a mess of hundreds of different files all mixed up with each other? If the latter case is true, would it be easy to somehow convert them into pdf files? I would have no idea how to do this but I am relatively technically adept so I could learn pretty quickly.

The 505 doesn't do folders, so that's out. You could copy the PNG files over to the 505 and view them individually, but that's probably not the best solution. I wouldn't reccomend putting them into a PDF, PDF's aren't the best viewing choice on a 505. I would reccomend converting them the JPG's and creating a CBR/CBZ file, then converting it to LRF in Calibre.

Is something like that relatively easy to do? I've read about the plugin for Calibre to convert CBR files to lRF but how about converting from JPEG to CBR?

To convert JPEG to CBR is essentially to archive all your files into RAR archive, and rename .RAR extension to .CBR .
Same with ZIP and .CBZ . |

Isn't that nifty! It's just a renamed zip file. But why even change the file name? I'm glad it's s easy to do.

You rename it to change the file association. If you're reading it on a computer, ZIP and RAR files will open up the zip and rar archiving programs. If you've got a comic viewing program installed, renaming it to CBZ or CBR will open the viewing program instead. |

I am new to sony reader also ..:-)
Given your user name has "In_japan" I am assuming you want mainly want to read Asian Manga. Unlike US comic which come in only single page scan format. Asian manga scan usually come either single page scan or double pages scan (2 pages side by side). Sony actually handle single page scanned manga very well. Like people point out it will be ezier to manage if you convert the images into a ebook. I am the lazy type and just write a script to add the title of manga's title at the beginning of the file name. You can slao put the manga into its own sd card. double scaned manga is not that ez. You can convert it and read it in landscape mode but the text quality is not that good. |

What I do is put the images into a zip file, rename it to a cbz file, then use calibre to convert it to an lrf. It even handles double scanned pages properly.
Calibres conversion does some image enhancement which makes the pages look much better than they do when viewed directly using the 505s internal colour-> greyscale conversion. I think calibre can also convert to epub (with 505 specific enhancement) but haven't tried that. |

I try Calibries and overall it did a good jobs, the end result is VERY good. The only down side is Calibries have problem handling Japanese character file name. It is ez to work around. Just rename the files before packing and make sure the file path are all ASCII characters.
