Is downloading legal in your country?

He is from the Netherlands. In our country downloading is legal. Uploading is not.

So his link was not illegal here as long it doesn't point to a server he owns.

I can imagine why he made the mistake

I believe that in the USA, the violation is in the owning/possession of content that violates the copyright of the work. So it's not just the act of downloading -- you could be in trouble for producing the file, for storing it on your computer or a server you own, for delivering it via e-mail or even on a CD or thumb drive, etc. Where things get really complicated for us is in the issue of format shifting of a legally obtained copy of the work.

Exactly. Since this is a world wide forum, with members from just about every country, the mods must be especially vigilant in allowing links. The future of this site iteslf could be put into jepardy.

There was no harm done, and no one is upset. I think everyone understood his kind intent. The only thing lacking was an explanation, which looks like its been handled.
