Iliad manufacturing issues...anyone else hear about this?

Hey all,
I had won an eBay auction about ten days ago for an iLiad second edition, to be followed by an email from the seller stating due to a stock issue they wouldn't be arriving for a week (which would have been this past thursday)

Today I get a follow up stating that due to a manufacturing change the new iLiad 2e's are not "compliant" in the US (I assume referring to the wireless device) and there will be further delay. The seller offered to ship a Book Edition today if I wanted.

At this point I am, frankly, pissed off, mostly for the seller offering an item which was not in stock. This also seems rather shady to a certain point, because accepting a different item than I bid on effectively nullifies any help eBay or paypal will offer should I have any problems with this seller.

Which is why I wanted to check here and see if anyone else knows of these manufacturing difficulties. Any news? I don't see anything on the iRex homepage, although that seems to be updated scarcely at best.

Hi,
Was the seller IRex?

Issues manufacturing or otherwise has plagued the iliad. Many in this forum are from the US and use the Iliad. Hence compat doesnt seem appropriate. I use it in Japan, for example.

This will be evident from the troubleshooting sections and irex forums.

However, IMHO, the seller has tried to short-sell.

P.S. The book edition is cheaper than the iliad v2. So if you are going to buy, you should renegotiate or something like that.

It was a third party seller via an eBay storefront. I'd rather not mention names at this point but I will once I reach a resolution and can comment without speculation.

I believe I will be getting the book edition instead and yes there will be a renegotiation on the price

I heard the production of Iliad had been shifted from Philippines to Taiwan. But I don't see how this is affecting your present transaction. may irrelevant...

That's interesting BL. It's possible that the new factory began using a slightly different component or process that changed the overall behavior of the unit.

By compliance I'm guessing the person I'm in contact with was referring to FCC compliance with regards to the wireless device.

It sounds like a scam. I've never heard of any "compliant" problems. The BE is worth less money than a Version 2 (they sell for $100 less). It sounds like the seller got you to bid thinking you were getting the more expensive v2, but is trying to give you a BE instead. That's basically a "bait and switch" scam.

There is currently on ebay an Iliad with a bad battery. I asked whether it was 1st or 2nd edition. She doesn't know but gives the following specs:

Product Type ER0100,
ID 00-16-7c-00-27 0a,
Software 2.12
On the back it says 01-0100-002-000-0000

Can anyone tell me if this is a 2nd edition device? I have the expertise to change the batteries, but I want a 2nd edition device.

ER0100 is the v1. ER0140 is the v2.

Main difference is the battery. They run the same firmware, same internal hardware, etc.

So, will the V1 unit accomodate the V2 batteries?

Yes. iRex even had an "upgrade" program at one point where v1 owners could send in their unit and iRex would replace the batteries with the larger v2 ones.

Since you have to replace the battery anyway, have you looked into this thread? You can put in larger batteries than even the v2 came with.

Just to follow up:
I took the route of accepting a refund from the shop and they promptly shipped me a pristine Book Edition as well as refunded me the price difference via paypal.

Upon reflection it would have been more wise to ask for a refund altogether and move on for a number of reasons, but I'm cursed with being a trusting soul so I went along with it. Since I have managed to get the refund into my bank account I'm considering the matter finished and that, aside from the initial issue of having an auction for an item not in stock, I've been dealt with honestly.

I think the iLiad v2 may be in legitimate supply constraints, so the vendor might not have been altogether untruthful, although yes, shouldn't have listed it if they didn't have it. See:

Even iRex says 5-10 business days, when I looked just now (this is vs. 2-3 for the DR). But I also notice that Amazon is showing the v2 as unavailable, as is eReaders. The only thing on eBay these days, new, seems to be the Book Edition. So maybe something is going on with the v2.
