Oh no, not vegetarians/vegans...

The non-'veg' is made sit at the 'veg' and special diet table (through no fault of his own; special diet category applies).
Suddenly he is under assault for his meat-eating ways. The verbal assault is on in earnest; a friendly meal is turned into a decidedly unfriendly debate about the rights of animals, the amount of materials used to feed animals and how disgusting one is to eat meat.
Save me from the horror!
How do I deal with this dining nightmare next time??
What ammunition should I bring to the table to defend myself against the verbal 'veg' barrage?

I think that I would demand to be seated at another table on account of an allergy to moral superiority.

(Alternatively, order a vegetarian dish next time. Then launch a polemic against anyone who dares to use a car, or for some other non-ecological practice.)

If you have a vegetarian as a dinner guest, and cook a vegetarian meal on their behalf, I think it only right to request that, in return, they cook you a nice juicy steak when you go and have dinner with them .

Actually, when I have vegetarians round for a meal then I usually do a vegetarian meal for everybody. I can't be bothered to make two different meals. And most non-vegetarians are fairly pleased to get a souffle or home-made pasta or pizza, so it's not a problem.

My impression was that AprilHare was complaining about the seating and company at a work-related event, or similar.

How about suggesting to your dinner mates that you prefer not to be assaulted simply for your dietary habits and couldn't the discussion be turned to something more palatable for everyone?

"Look! I think they're baking chocolate chip cookies for us all!"

Assuming that it doesn't happen too often, but that you know it is going to happen again, if I were you and if I could find a vegetarian meal that would also fit my special dietary needs, I would just go with a vegetarian meal on that occasion.

Given that you are going to be stuck at that table with a bunch of complete assholes, best to just fly under the radar. If you can't find a vegetarian meal that will suit your special needs, then if one of them speaks up, tell them the truth, you were not able to find a vegetarian meal that fit in with your dietary needs, and could they possibly find something else to talk about?

Perhaps you can adapt my response when I am told that I could lose weight with diet and exercise: "Wow! I never would have thought of that on my own! You are so smart! Thank you for completely changing my life." Then finish the ice cream and look at them like they are the rudest people you have ever turned over a rotten log and found.

You mean there are still people out there who think that all you need to do to lose weight is proper diet and exercise?? They don't know about leptin and resistin and genetically based obesity?? Do you live in an area of massive under education (sort of like me)?

Are they sitting there nekkid? Because unless they are, they really have nothing to say! (and... well, if they Are, then you've got Lots bigger problems... possibly Literally )

Lets see... vegans... are they wearing clothes made from chemically (poluting) materials? From naturally occuring materials? (ouch, poor plants, hurting them that way ) Leather shoes? well, lets not go there!

People who pick at others are a real pain in the ass. They aren't making the world better, they're just looking for attention because they haven't done anything to deserve it otherwise.

I was vegan from the time I was 5 or 6, by choice. I changed that around 37, by choice again. I might go back, I might not, but I never felt the need to force my opinions on my dining companions. If yours do, you might want to seek out new companions...just asked to be moved from that table due to allergies.*

*an allergy to an ass is serious business, if there are several of them in your area, you could die from assfixation
