TeleRead series: Two weeks with a PRS-700

I've started writing a series on TeleRead about a two-week review experience with a Sony PRS-700. All the columns in the series (three so far, but more soon) can be found here:

http://www.teleread.org/category/two...-sony-prs-700/

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

hi Robo!
As an ex PRS 700 owner ( aka biased ), I have to say that you are fair. Yes, the 700 is not perfect... neither are we.

Keep us posted when you post your new entries!

P.S.
Sony should let you keep it!

The next one is completed and scheduled to post tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Central time. In that one, I look at the ergonomics and readability of the screen. Clicking on the link I posted in the first message will list it when it's up. Don't miss it!

Which means that all the DRM-formatted books I’ve bought already from Fictionwise (for eReader and a scant handful in MobiPocket) won’t load. (On the other hand, since Baen recently came out with ePub versions of all its e-books, every Webscription or Free Library title will load right in—and Fictionwise multi-format books can be downloaded in Sony’s own e-book format.)
Hi Robotech_Master,
There is a slight error on your article. The bold comment above is a bit misleading as it implies you could not read Bean Web subscriptions in the past.
Bean web subscriptions have always supported LRF which is the DRM-free version of BeBB(LRX). So even without ePUB you could have always read their books.

Aside from that great writeup!

It may just be that I never noticed the LRF format was available because I have not, up to this point, owned a Sony. To be honest, I was rather startled when I did notice it. I was aware of ePub support being added only recently.

I don't know how long they have been putting books out in the LRF format, but I doubt that it has "always" been available. For one thing, none of the Baen CDs over at The Fifth Imperium have books in LRF format (or ePub, but that goes without saying), and I had to use Calibre to convert them.

Anyway, I've posted a couple of new columns, including another YouTube video. Use the link at the head of the thread to get to a listing of all postings in the "Two Weeks With" category.

Actually, the last two CDs (16 and 17) do include LRFs. The format was added more than a year ago.

My latest column is up, looking at how well the PRS-700 reads PDFs.

Have you used the PRS-700 for the Adobe DE pdfs? How does it fair with those? I'm wondering how well does the text flow and things of that nature work with the device, do tables hold up? The NY public library has a bunch of Adobe DEs but my Iliad can't view them so I'm looking for an alternative

Cool article, good stuff on the PDFs. I think the best devices for PDF reading are the Irex ones right now but they are so overpriced its ridiculous. I have an Iliad and love it for PDFs but I'd like a device that does the reflow for text PDFs which Iliad can't do. Thanks again for the info it was helpful

Any comments from folks that have closely compared the 700 to the 505/500 regarding the somewhat less clear eInk (due to the touch screen) on the 700? I am an early adopter of the 500 and not sure if I want a 505 or a 700. Thoughts?

the 505 is the clearest screen on the market, the 700 is dark, but its no worse that a 500 screen.

but, if you don't need the features on the 700, Annotation/search, and the Side lights for reading in dark places, get the 505.

in a dark room the 700 wins.
in a dusky room, the 700 needs the light on, while the 505 is perfectly readable.
in a bright room, the 505 is perfectly readable and the 700 is fine.
In sun, the 505 is a little too bright, the 700 is perfect

also. if you live in the US. I highly Recommend the kindle.

There's also the question of whether you're the kind who'd draw in the margins on a real book. If you like to add notes... well, you only really have one choice between the PRS-505 and PRS-700, don't you?
