Fix/rebuy/upgrade?
Hello all,
I have been a lurker here for a long time and owned a prs 500, which I adored. It developed severe screen issues (one half freezes all black) which I could not fix with resets. I am an ebook addict now and it was probably the only thing aside from audiobooks on the ipod which help me sleep ![]() My major question is about whether to upgrade or not. It will cost me 250 to have Sony fix the reader, let alone shipping from the UK. I prefer that to replacing with another auction model which can jack in anytime. Have people had good experiences moving from 500 to 505 or 700? As a leftie I found the 500 ideal but would love to hear from people about if they have upgraded and enjoy it more. I love my gadgets but in this case not into upgrading for the sake of it, for once lol. I do not need a dictionary or images. But definitely interested in if people have found an upgrade (forced or not) worth it. Bear in mind I am a leftie. Otherwise I may just have Sony repair this one. Pleasure to meet you all after so long lurking, Skellytig |

Hi! It's nice to meet you, even though it is under bad circe umstances. Do you suppose it got hot, maybe left in a sunny window or car?

Spend the extra money and get a 505. If you liked the 500 you will like the 505 even more.

Yeah, definitely upgrade if it's going to cost 250 to fix the 500. You'll be happier with the newer model for a little more.

I am right handed but also like the feel and key placement of the 500 better than the 505. Even the increased quality of the 505's screen is not enough to get me to switch.
I understand your reluctance about acquiring a second hand unit of a model that may be two and a half years old before you get it. While there were quality control problems with the original screens that seems to be fixed on the 505/700 models, there is still the problem with the not user changeable two plus year old battery. (There is a thread around here someplace about how to change your own battery.) I'm sure you already know that the 505 offers a faster processor, more internal memory, and the ability to read ePub in addition to a better, sharper screen. I did not find these enough to overcome the awkward button interface. The 500 is simply an easier device for me to use. If my screen went out today, I would look to replace it with another 500 either through picking up a used unit (~$125 to $175) or through Sony repair (~$250.) |

I've never owned a 500, but I am a lefty and I do find the page turning buttons on the 505 quite comfortable. On the 505, there are two sets of buttons you can use to turn pages with, and I find my self using both of them depending on the position I'm holding my book at.
My recommendation is to upgrade instead of paying $250 to repair--but, maybe you could stop in to a store and play around with the 505 and see if you could get used to the position of the buttons. Good luck with your decision! dordale ![]() |

Hi Skellytig and welcome to MobileRead. I was going to buy a 500 with a gift certificate I anticipated receiving for my birthday back in mid-2007 but it didn't materialize and so, it wasn't until early 2008 that I was ready to buy and, by then the 505 was on the market. And I think I was really lucky that was the way it worked out. I really like the 505. And it has features, like supporting ePub and PDF formats the 500 doesn't

I'm strongly left handed and I find the 505 very comfortable to use, even with the cover.
