Classmate PC "tablet"
This device looks like it might be an interesting alternative since it will have a fold down screen. If it is in line with other netbooks out there I would expect it to be sub $500.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/16/i...t-at-ces-2009/ Thoughts? BOb |

Now that's the direction I'd like to see netbooks take. If it can be made light enough without too short a battery life, I'd be very interested in something like this. Thanks for the post, BOb.

It'll probably be a lot more but I'm curious how the new OQO Model 02+ will be for ebooks.

I built a wiki page for this product. If it follows the classmate idea the screen resolution will only be 800x480. Still good but not as good as most other 9" (8.9") screens these days. I haven't been able to definitively determine the resolution. I noticed that the classmate web site from Intel actually talks about this device as the 3rd generation version.

Here is a hands on review of this device by Engadget at CES.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/v...e-pc-hands-on/ It appears it is going to be $449. BOb Last edited by pilotbob; 01-10-2009 at 10:53 PM. |

Picture #23 shows FBReader in tablet mode, but from too close up to tell much. It does seem to have a set of customized icons in the toolbar, probably for consistency with other apps.

This is now for sale as the CTL 2GO Convertible Classmate PC, for $549.00. The price will likely go down when it is available from amazon.com etcetera. The 8.9'' LCD, is 1024 x 600.
For general use, I think the Asus EEE tablets may be more ground breaking (not technically, but in price-performance), see ASUS Eee PC T91 and T101H touchscreen tablet hands-on. |

There is a very complete review at Laptop Magazine. It is running Windows XP (not the tablet edition), and the bundled software includes FoxitReader, FBReader, MyScript Stylus 3.0, EverNote, ArtRage 2, and ArcSoft Webcam Companion. The handle is removable, which will probably help with adult buyers.
This looks like a very nice device, and this class of machine is a serious alternative to the iRex DR 1000. They are much heavier and have slightly shorter battery life, but on the other hand they are complete netbook class systems and significantly cheaper. |
