Nokia Online Calculator unlocks your Nokia for free
![]() I am not a lawyer, though I've heard that it's not illegal to unlock a phone, even if the operators might like you to think it is. Only be careful when entering the unlock sequence. As far as I know you got 5 attempts to unlock by code; after that you would have to call your network provider to unlock the phone for you. Note that a few of the newer Nokia models are not supported, inluding the 6630, 6680, 7710, 9500, 9300 and 6620. |

Pardon my ignorance... but if your Nokia phone works perfectly on your provider's network, what benefit could "unlocking" the phone have?
Maybe I don't quite understand why you'd want to unlock it in the first place, unless you roam between countries that your provider does not support (US => Europe => Australia for example). |

I could immediately think of three scenarios:
1. You want to switch your provider but at the same time keep your old phone to save the few bucks needed to buy a new phone. 2. You are out of cash and want to sell your phone on eBay. 3. You feel somehow cheated by knowing that your phone is "crippled" ![]() |

You may want to add that sometimes locked phones are also crippled in features and use branding "features" such as your providers logo as a non-removable background tag or customized menu items.

Ok good answers... we use Cingular here, and from what I can tell, out units are left untouched from Nokia directly (we can change background images, edit menu items, etc.) ourselves.
I don't know about switching providers so I can't speak to that point, but I doubt I'd want to move away from Cingular to any other (US-bound) provider. When going overseas of course, I might want to. |

That's cool Colin. Wish I had had it when I went through the unlock dance with TMo. You gotta call and ask them for the unlock code. It's sort of like asking permission really. Europeans and Asians can do it online themselves, which is how it should be!
