WM 05's Persistent Storage from the Inside Out

With Windows Mobile 2005 coming to our cell phones and PDAs soon, you may want to become accustomed to the idea of "persistent storage", which means that in future all of your personal data, user-installed applications, and updates are stored in non-volatile flash ROM memory. Mike Calligaro posted some interesting details on his MS Mobile Team blog:

In Mike's own words: "No, there's nothing innovative about Persistent Storage. If a marketing guy tries to tell you otherwise, send him to me. But PS is a good thing." By September, we will hopefully know more.

The Zaurus line of PDAs have been using Persistent Storage (although they don't call it that, they just call it flash memory) since the SL-5600 model.

I wouldn't use a PDA that didn't offer this, if I have to soft reset the machine or remove the batteries for some reason (have a couple of spares for long trips ) then I expect my data to still be there afterwards.

Can't remeber when exaclty the SL-5600 came out, but it was late 2003 or early 2004, good to see MS finaly catching up

Bahh. PS is so slow. Just install some apps in your Built In Storage (For those with PPC) and compare them to apps in your ram. its night and day. Thats reason enough for me to steer clear of WM2005. There is another reason as well. No WiFi on activesync for WM2005. If one is worried about losing his data, use SpriteBackup. Even with PS one should run this. If one loses his data due to battery, charge it up and run the .exe backup, and 3 mins later you are back where you started.
