What are some problems that I should be aware of?

I'm looking at buying a PRS-505, and it looks like it is a pretty good deal so far. However, I want to know of any problems that you guys might have experienced with it before buying the device.

Several Amazon reviews mention that the device broke for them after several months, and that it was a huge hassle to deal with the Sony customer service, but I wasn't sure about how prevalent this is with the PRS-505.

Thanks guys for answering this. I was just recommended to this website and will be sure to check here out if I have any problems with the prs-505 (Hopefully I won't have any of course )

We have (4) 505's and (2) 700's in the family. The 505's have never had a problem. Great every day.....

The 700's are more troublesome.

I am using the 700 at the moment. And every single day....I wish I had the 505 instead.

Be careful!! The books come to life... I barely made it out of a Clive Barker novel alive... *wipes the brain goo off his face*

This is definitely the impression I get on this board as well. I really haven't read of problems with the 505. I just have a 505 and nothing else so...

Perhaps the number one problem is that you will find yourself arriving to work late, sneaking away, hiding in closets, taking extra trains, etc., just to squeeze in another few pages of reading. The 505 makes reading so convenient, so comfortable, so easy, and so damn cheap that you'll forget you have family, friends, and a dog! The machine itself is a dream.

I have had no trouble with mine so far.

Do get a protective cover / case for it because if the screen breaks, it is a very expensive repair (this is true of all the e-ink devices).

I have a 505 with nary a problem. I've even dropped it twice and it survived relatively intact (I do not recommend this, bad for your heart).

The only problem you'll have is your free time won't be so free.

I've had no hardware problems with the PRS-505 at all, after many months. When I curse Sony, it's because of software issues :-)

But if you use Calibre and avoid the Sony bookstore you should be fine. (It baffles me why the Sony Bookstore website cannot perform simple searches without grinding to a halt)

We've had 3 500s and 4 505s and haven't had any hardware problems with any of them. As a matter of fact, we passed along our old 500s when we upgraded, and they are still being used by their new owners.

I have no problem with the Sony website, either. Granted, sometimes the site is unavailable, but I defy you to find a site that has never had a problem with availability. That is a very rare thing. I use the Sony website to buy books all the time. I have literally bought hundreds of books from them. I love that I can use prepaid cards for the website. Those prepaid cards makes it much easier to limit my spending. If I don't have credits available, I don't buy the book until I get one - unless it's a new Dean Koontz. Dean Koontz books are emergencies and require immediate purchase!

Really it's all relative. Compare the performance of a search on google.com to one in the Sony eBook Library. A search taking 10 or more seconds is VERY slow these days.

Well google is faster than the Sony store for sure. But I usually don't wait more than five seconds when I'm using it via the eLibrary. I usually do my browsing just on their internet site though, which loads as fast as any page. So when I buy my books I know exactly what I'm looking for. I highly recommend that to anyone.

Me Too

I'll put my two cents worth in also. I have had my Sony 505 for almost a year I think and have had no problems whatsoever. I have had a couple of books that were converted lock up the reader bur reconversion fixed the problem.

I love my BLUE Sony and finally convinced my dad to buy one for himself and leave the old REB1100's behind. His has arrived already and is only awaiting his return home tomorrow to pick it up.
