LG is the New PalmSource Licensee

Hot off the press, PalmSource has revealed the identitiy of it's new licensee.... LG. That also happens to be my own favorite big-name phone maker.

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - PalmSource Inc. (Nasdaq:PSRC - news) on Wednesday said it licensed its software for handheld computers to South Korean consumer electronics company LG Electronics Inc.(066570.K) for its most advanced cellphones.

The Palm software will be used in LG's latest "smartphones," which are phones that have features that are similar to personal computers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed

Good for them... PalmSource really needed a success story like this one.

This could be good... especially given the reactions from some valuable ex-Palmsource employees who I was personally working with on some initiatives to help drive Palmsource towards embracing Linux in an amicable way.

Sigh.

Thanks for the link, Hacker. Looks like the layoffs took everyone as a surprise - including former PalmSource employees!

I am sorry to hear from Chris Dunphy that Michael Mace has been forced to leave the company. He did such a good job in giving honest answers to Bob's massive PalmSource Devcon interview last month ;( I am sure it wasn't easy for PalmSource management to decide who has to leave and who can stay in the company... those decisions are always tough and not necessarily always fair.

There is certainly some great talent available now if anyone is looking at the moment. I guess a lot of times layoffs are not about the individual, but it's about the position/role. In the case of PalmSource, it seems there was a focus on mid to upper management. That means that the reality is that you're going to have to affect some high profile people whether you want to or not.

Personally, I was really sad to hear Mike Mace was among those leaving, but I bet whatever he ends up doing next will be pretty neat also. He was such a great ambassador for PalmSource, and so nice to all of us in the web community. He'll be greatly missed, and we certainly wish him the very best in his next endeavor.

What, Mike Mace is leaving. Wow. Now that is a shaocker more than the LG piece. I hope that he finds greener pastures, as he was really a great guy for the palmOS side of things.
