Extend Orb Streaming Media with add-on API

Remember Orb Streaming Media which had first sounded like a marvelous idea, but then failed - at least in our opinion - due to the use of some proprietary software? Although you are still required to run the Orb Windows application, at least there's now an add-on API (updated: released under a Mozilla Public License) allowing developers to write their own DLL libraries to extend (PDF) Orb's media streaming capabilities.

Well gee, this certainly seems like a good idea. For next, why don't you simply release the tool as open-source?

well, we might someday, but...

... we thought first we'd take a smaller step towards seeing whether anyone's interested in leveraging our platform with this Add-On API, which we just switched to being under the Mozilla Public License.

Think you'll be using the Add-On to make anything, yourself? Some Canadian developer who's been emailing us is writing a TiVo Add-On that's supposed to be ready like tomorrow or something. I'm pretty psyched about it: I almost forked over for a Sling box just because of their KILLER TiVo interface (and their general niftiness), but now I should be good.

That's a great step forward. Good luck with the add-on and I'll hope a lot of creative minds will come up with new ideas based on Orb to raise the interest in a general open-source version!
