Addrerss book for Kindle

On another forum, somebody inquired whether it was possible to have an address book for the Kindle. As perhaps some people here may wonder about it, here is what I posted there:

I have a Word document with a long list of people with their address and phone numbers. I also have another document with just phone numbers.

It is very easy to have these emailed to your kindle. I also send them again when I have added or updated them.

I also keep other documents such as medical history, medications and similar information that I may need when away from home. Just as good as a PDA, but easier to read!

To keep from being confused, when I send these documents to be emailed to my Kindle, I preface them with a Z, so they will all be at the end of the list of books. Such as Z_Address.

Works very well.

I tried for a while to have a shopping list on the Kindle; writing in what I wanted using annotations. It didn't work very well on the Kindle 1, since you can't actually see the annotation while reading the document; you have to click on it and "edit" it. It might work better with the Kindle 2, though.

I just make my shopping list in a text file and copy it over. I have my recipes in individual text files, too. I usually name my shopping list 00-ShoppingList.txt and my recipes 0-RecipeName.txt. That way when I alpha sort I get them all. I've considered changing the numbers to a code that denotes the type of recipe it is for easier browsing until we get folders. I really like having recipes when I'm shopping since I don't make menus ahead of time. I shop based on what's fresh, local and the best quality at the time. Having my recipes on the Kindle has definitely saved me from a lot of second trips for missed ingredients.

If anyone else likes HTML and wants an address book/list, I've found that using an unordered list (ul) works nicely. Start a ul, placing the name as the first line of the li item. Then, for each additional line (like address, phone numbers, etc.) do a line break (br). I add another break with a non-breaking space, then close the list item (li). Close the unordered list at the end. I also added an h3 entry at the top saying "Address book". I converted with mobigen: "mobigen.exe address_book.html -rebuild". I then used mobi2mobi to set the title and author.

The formatting came out nicely on my Kindle.

I can see this being quite useful for large shopping lists, if formatted properly. I'm fairly competent at html and could get one done up easily for myself, or just use a simple document of course. As for storing phone numbers, kind of pointless given that I have a cell phone; address would be useful though.
